Harry's POV

I knew that Hermione meant well, but that didn't stop me from being angry with her. I'd been the owner of the best broom in the world for a few short hours, and now, because of her interference, I didn't know whether I'd ever see it again.

Ron was furious with Hermione too. As far as he was concerned, the stripping-down of a brand-new Firebolt was nothing less than criminal damage. Hermione, who remained convinced that she had acted for the best, started avoiding the common room. Me and Ron supposed she took refuge in the library. (Y/N) was quite disappointed with Hermione not telling us that she was going to go to Professor McGonagall, but she was also upset that Ron and I were ignoring her completely.

"She meant well. We could be a hundred percent positive that the broom's got no jinxes but what if it does?" she asked us.

"So you're okay with McGonagall swooping in and taking it then?" said Ron, heatedly.

"No, of course not!" said (Y/N), with the same heat as Ron, "but you're ignoring her for the most pettiest reason!"

"That was my broomstick, (Y/N)." I added.

"Exactly! A broomstick! I'm sure you'll have it back before our new match."

"You're only saying that because your Nimbus isn't gone yet! If it was, then you'd me just as angry as us!" Ron retorted.

"That's not it at all!" (Y/N) said, angrily.

"How come yours is not gone yet, eh?"

"You tell me Mr I-know-everything! Let me tell you something, genius! I went to McGonagall right after Harry's broom was taken and you wanna know what she said?" (Y/N) was standing up now, Ron gulped. "She said that my broom has already been checked, but she won't tell me anything else!"

Ron didn't say anything.

"What? Cat got your tongue?"

All in all, we were glad when the rest of the school returned shortly after New Year, and Gryffindor Tower became crowded and noisy again. Wood sought me out on the night before term started.

"Had a good Christmas?" he said, and then, without waiting for an answer, he sat down, lowered his voice, and said, "I've been, doing some thinking over Christmas, Harry. After last match, you know. If the Dementors come to the next one.. I mean.. we can't afford you to -- well --"

Wood broke off, looking awkward.

"I'm working on it," I said quickly. "Professor Lupin said he'd train me to ward off the Dementors. We should be starting this week. He said he'd have time after Christmas."

"Ah," said Wood, his expression clearing. "Well, in that case -- I really didn't want to lose you as Seeker, Harry. And have you ordered a new broom yet?"
