December 23rd, 1933
Despite Cody's stern words to President Winchester, he was finally granted a well-deserved break. It wasn't a long one, but it was long enough to escape the weight of politics, if only for a little while. With Christmas approaching, he and Jazmin took the opportunity to travel north to spend the holiday with Vice President Karlos Codinera and his family.
The carriage ride through the countryside was quiet, save for the rhythmic sound of the wheels rolling over the dirt road. Cody sat with his hat resting on his lap, his fingers lightly drumming against the brim as he gazed out the window. The recent debates in the Senate still lingered in his mind. The issue of military funding and the fragile slavery compromise was truly resolved.
Jazmin, sensing his thoughts, leaned her head against his shoulder. "You're supposed to be resting, love."
He exhaled through his nose, finally breaking his stare from the passing landscape. "I know."
She took his hand in hers. "Then start acting like it."
He chuckled softly, giving her fingers a light squeeze.
As they arrived at the Codinera residence, the townhouse stood tall against the gray winter sky. The moment their carriage pulled up, Karlos was already waiting at the entrance, dressed in a dark coat and with a warm smile.
"Cody."
Cody returned the grin as they clasped hands, pulling each other in for a firm embrace, followed by a strong pat on the back.
"Karlos."
Karlos then turned to Jazmin, offering her a small bow before taking her hand and pressing a polite kiss to her knuckles. "My lady."
Jazmin giggled. "Always the gentleman."
Cody rolled his eyes playfully. "Alright, enough of that."
Karlos smirked before gesturing toward the house. "Come inside. The roads must have been rough."
As they stepped into the warm interior of the townhouse, Karlos led them toward the sitting room, speaking as they walked. "Maria and the children have been looking forward to this. Your letter last month had them counting down the days."
Cody smiled at that. "I've missed them too." But then, noticing the slight hesitation in Karlos' voice, he added, "How's Maria?"
Karlos sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "She's been distant. Quiet. I don't know what's wrong, and whenever I try to ask, she changes the subject." He let out a frustrated breath. "That's actually part of why I was hoping you'd come."
Cody frowned but nodded. "I'll talk to her."
Before the conversation could continue, the sound of tiny footsteps came charging down the hall.
"TÍO CODY!"
Before he could react, two small figures launched themselves at him, knocking him off balance as they latched onto him in a fierce hug.
Jazmin gasped. "¡Cuidado, niños! Your tío is still recovering!"
The children immediately turned to her, eyes wide with concern—before throwing themselves into her arms as well. "Auntie Jazmin!"
Karlos, meanwhile, raised an eyebrow at Cody before glancing down at his leg. "I thought you said your accident wasn't serious."
Cody sighed, still on the ground with his niece and nephew clinging to his arms. "It's a long story."
Karlos smirked but extended a hand, pulling his cousin back to his feet. "It always is with you."
Meanwhile, the children, noticing Jazmin's belly, pressed their small hands against it, their eyes filled with curiosity.
