Chapter 32
We ventured into the land of the living in silence. Not a word was uttered through our whole expedition. Only the occasional "how's everyone holding up?" or "almost there" was exchanged.
I think it was because we were all to nervous to say anything. We all had our moments of wanting to retreat for sure, no doubt about that. I mean any sane person would feel a little uneasy about traveling into a place where your typically not wanted.
I rubbed the back of my neck, a move just to give me something to focus on. I looked to my left over at Ronnie who was walking a little bit ahead, a serious look on his face. And to my right Jackson, fiddling with something in his pocket anxiously.
"We're here" Ronnie spoke nervously, his voice wavering.
"Okay, so just to confirm things I'll review the plan-"
"Wait since when was there a plan? I could've sworn you said that I could wing it" I interject Jackson.
Jackson opens his mouth to protest, but closes it and drags a hand down his face, exhaling loudly.
"Fine, fine. Leave it to you Elena. But if things get out of hand Ronnie and I shall not hesitate to intervene on the situation. Understood?" Jackson said, a little too stern for my liking.
"Understood" Ronnie and I mumble.
"Good" he says, leaning over and kissing my forehead.
"What no kiss for me?" Ronnie says wearing a look of hurt.
"Shut up and walk Ron" Jackson says slapping the back of Ronnie's head. Ronnie chuckles and soon we all are laughing, forgetting the task at hand.
"I'm gonna to pretend that was a love slap" Ronnie says fixing his jacket and walking through the prison gates.
"Whatever makes you happy" Jackson says leading me through the gates.
We proceeded through the entrance of the prison and walked past the lady at the front desk. She pays no attention to us; she cannot see us. All she does is shiver and continue flipping through papers.
I smirk and we walk through the familiar corridor to Jakes cell.
We reach the end where Jakes cell is only to find it vacant. My eyes widen and I grasp the bars firmly, furiously searching for him.
"Where is he!" I panic.
"Calm down darling!" Ronnie yells.
"How can I calm down? He. Isn't. There" I say fuming and panicking.
"They probably moved him, he was in a holding cell when we first saw him." Jackson says matter of factly.
I feel myself relax slightly and release the grip I was holding on the bars.
"Now, lets go find him" Ronnie says softly.
I nod my head, following them both down another corridor of cells. I look from side to side at the cells, observing some of the inmates. A couple of them sat there emotionless, some talking to themselves with a crazed look in their eyes that I have only seen in movies. I avert my eyes and look straight ahead, colliding with Ronnie's back. Oops.
"You alright" Ronnie asks turning around.
"Fine" I say.
Ronnie nods and turns back around. Ronnie and i walk toward Jackson is stopped up ahead at a cell.
We reach the cell and I peer into it, face to face with my killer.
I freeze and stand there, staring down on him, observing him.
