Erwin was looking at me for saying something worthwhile and changing the conditions of Robin's proposal, there were whispers all around, many eyes fixed on the main curve table on which we and four Deltas sat, with Alpha.

"We could always challenge the beta for the position in the annual league......." snickered Roy, he was the youngest and Robin's favorite  hunter in our pack.

The annual league......... I almost forgot about that, every year our pack held this competition where any rank except for Alpha's was open for claiming. Of-course the person who challenges must be suitable enough for that position.  Maximum challenges arise the first year to receiving a rank, it is the best way for the new fighters gain acceptance.

"Oh Really? I'll be honored to defend my position" I flashed them with one of my cold grins, eyes slightly flicking silver. My aura heavy darkened, last year I had faced fourteen challenges one after the other for my position. Many whimpers were heard, it was hard to remain standing under the oppressive dominating power.

"Lower your aura, you are suffocating the new warriors, the are already in distress because of the rouger case earlier" Robin ordered through the link.

I took a deep breath reducing the heavy air.

Roy stepped back, a bead of sweat forming on his face, "I didn't mean you Beta Selena......... um........it was about the new beta"

'Don't forget that he's our mate' Clara's words were almost on the tip of my tongue

"Ahem........" I cleared my throat, "Don't forget I am still your beta....... I am not rejecting my true mate. As for the co-ordinate beta position it can remain vacant for now, I don't think anyone here is worthy enough to stand by me yet"

Such an arrogant narcissist statement, but no one objected. People around us sighed in relief. I don't know whether to be worried or laugh out. They were more worried about the co-ordinate position than acceptance of the new member as my mate.

Although there were still some dark hostile faces in the crowd but most of the attention accumulated towards me and Robin.

Robin secretly winked at me with that 'told-you' look on his face.

"Any objections?"  Gamma Erwin asked.

There was silence for a few seconds before Delta Bismark broke the ice, "Then will  your  mate enter the annual league like every new member? Since I don't see him capable of anything other than an omega right now. Oh...... of-course we can give him a exception like Luna Jesse"

Fearless........ that's the perfect word to describe Delta Bismark. Usually people would think ten times before agitating their Alpha and Beta at the same time. But for ruling the pack for seven years beside my father, he had no second thoughts about throwing offensive remarks.

Jesse was excluded from her first annual league because of Robin and my insistence. It was not taken positively.........combine that with my disrespect and resistance, it took our pack quite some time to see her as our real Luna.

Robin's fist stiffed and eyes filled with silent fury, but his anger was much more controlled than mine, he had heard similar remarks from Delta a few times before.

At times new comers do wonder, why we tolerate our Delta's disrespect and inobedience. The answer is simple because they were the ones who kept the pack stable and working after the death of former Alpha. Gaining power doesn't mean one can take away complete authority from former associates. If we do that immediately after succession  it will result in a dissatisfaction and greater disputes than one can suppress.

I was about to refuse Kyle's participation, he was neither interested nor good at combat. But before I could say anything, father spoke up, "Kyle, do you know what annual league is?"

"Yes sir" Kyle squeezed my hand, nodding with his brave face up.

"It next one will be conducted in four months, will you join?"

I was stunned.......... ignoring all of us he directly spoke to Kyle who had been quiet all this while. I didn't want to push him to the edge on his first official meeting. Wait!..... how did he know about annual league? And what if he says yes? Does he even know how brutal our warriors are? What if he gets severely injured?  What about the training?

He must not.......... "Yes sir, I'm willing"

"No, he's not!" my eyes widened and composition finally broke, I squeezed his hand tightly in anger making him flinch.

Delta's eyes narrowed and lips twitched up, he finally had me cornered "Beta Selena, why do you have objections if the lad agrees? Don't you think your being a overcautious?"

Maybe I was being 'Overprotective' but the grin some of the warriors had was not exactly the friendly kind. I couldn't always control or watch over them and looking at Kyle's former position and demure, the new-comes treatment will be harsher than usual. Specially when they see him as a competition for co-beta position.

'When you speak something remember what value your words have. You are a Beta here not a weak pathetic child who can say words on her own whims'  that's the second thing I was taught by him.

Displaying a weakness is never an option ............

I stayed silent, leaving Kyle's hand and bringing both my hands on the table.

This might be a suitable time for negotiation.  I regained my composition with a strict business like attitude, "I'll let my mate into the league on the condition that he'll officially enter the pack after getting a rank"

"That's absurd! We cannot allow an outsider to remain in the pack premises, he could easily infiltrate and transfer information!"

"I take the responsibility of all his actions...........I think you're well aware how 'we' deal with spies"  that cold ruthless statement silenced many people.  Kyle  was specially uncomfortable by my side, but I paid him no mind. Granting anymore specially concerns will bring him in a more messed up situation, besides he himself agreed to father's questions.

Delta Bismark still had that unsettled glint on his face but didn't say any further.

"Stop the car!"

Erwin pulled the breaks as soon as those words left my mouth.

"What is it?"

"Selena?" Kyle questioned, meekly looking at me with a bit of concern and fear.

I ignored him.

"Erwin, take him home, I'm going for a run"

"Come on Selena! It's pouring down, beside Robin will be mad if I leave you in the middle of road for a 'run' " Erwin argued from the driver's seat.

Clara was storming my head to get out and vent out her frustration. I was angry and exasperated by our lack of control and............ the fact that Kyle dragged himself into this mess.  I needed sometime to think....... think about it all.

I got out of the car, removing and throwing in my jacket and favorite t-shirt. The freezing winds and pressure of water droplet felt amazing against my overheated skin.

Without glancing back, I knew my darling mate was blushing madly in the backseat and I would love to tease him later but at the moment I didn't care.............

Bones started cracking and reshaping, remaining cloths tore off and hair grew out turning into dark brown fur. In the lack of sunlight it almost seemed midnight black.  A loud growl erupted through the peaceful forest as Clara took control.  Not wasting another second she started running into the woods.

"......."

I could hear Erwin groaning behind me  "At least have decency to find some clothes before returning home!"   he shouted.
