“H-huh? What? Did you just ask me to be your manager?” I asked her again, flabbergasted at the thought of Chiyu Tamade asking me to be her band’s manager.
“Uhm, yeah, you. Who else would I be talking to?” Chiyu said, looking at me rather oddly.
“Okay, uh, first of all, why me?” I asked sceptically.
“Well, first of all, I trust you. Being a childhood friend of mine, you mean quite a lot to me. And looking at your build...I think you’d be perfect for the job.” Chiyu replied, eyeing me from head to toe.
“Gee, I don’t know Chiyu. I’m quite busy…” I trailed off.
“If it’s basketball practice, I’ll let you come afterwards.” Chiyu replied, pausing for a while. “I’ll also pay off your rents, and give you lunch too. Isn’t working part-time in that shabby convenience store only paying you minimum wage?”
“How’d you know I work in-” I was cut off yet again by Chiyu.
“I did a background check on you,” she said, looking at the floor smugly. “The money provided by your parents wasn’t enough, so you got a roommate to halve the rent, but you were still struggling to pay for food weren’t you?” she said, still looking down.
The lighting in the room made it so that I could see her eyebrow raise but merely the shadow of her facial features. I spoke up again, “Alright fine that is true, but-”
Chiyu cut me off for the third time now, slightly annoying me.
“But what?! I’m giving you the best conditions here, and you’re still going to turn me down?” Chiyu shouted.
“I just don’t know if I’m the right person for the job!” I shouted back, losing my patience.
Chiyu, exasperated, sighed and fished something out of her pocket, handing it to me. It was us when we were younger. We were walking home from school next to the train tracks with our school bags in one hand and a popsicle in another. The train would pass by every twenty-two minutes, the time we usually take to walk home. That day the picture was taken was just after Career Day in school, a day where we dressed up as our future profession. Of course, Chiyu dressed up as a famous DJ, she slung headphones around her neck, looked for the coolest leather jacket she could find and put it on. That was ten years ago, and yet I could still remember it like it was yesterday.
“Do you remember what we talked about around 10 years ago? I said that I would form the ultimate band in the world! And do you know what you said in return?” she pushed on.
I pondered on her words for a moment. What did I tell her on that day? We were just four, how could she had possibly remembered? Right there and then, the memories came flooding back to me.
“I-i said that I would become your manager… Didn’t I… ” I said, looking at her.
She looked up from the ground and met my eyes, “Right! So you do remember! And you wouldn’t go back on your word, would you?!” she exclaimed.
“Alright, alright, calm down. I’ll be your manager like I promised, but I want to give this a trial run, is that ok?” I asked.
Chiyu looked at me before smiling and replying, “Alright, sure! I don’t see why not. I want you to come here tomorrow at 6 am sharp.”
“6 am?! I have school tomorrow!” I gasped.
“Tomorrow’s a public holiday. Now see you, you better go home and get some rest. We have a busy day tomorrow~” She said, waving me off.
