nineteen; only hope

"Can we talk?"  I heard Ellie ask over my new personal cell. I sat in another room and looked through the window where Spencer and the team was. "Of course, Ellie. What's wrong?" I asked and she sounded afraid and scared.

"Am I aloud to call you and Spencer my mom and my dad?" She asked and I gulped and I stood up and knocked on the window to catch Spencer's attention. The team looked over at me and then I made eye contact with Spencer and he walked into the room.

"Ellie, why do you want to do that?" I asked confused and Spencer came in, with his hands down by his side. "Well, everyone at school calls their parents mom and dad. And it feels weird to call you both by your names."  She said and I looked over at Spencer who walked closer to me.

"Ellie. We both love you very much. But if you don't feel comfortable calling us mom and dad, you don't have to." He said and she sniffled, and I knew something was wrong.

"Ellie. What's really bothering you?" I asked and she began to cry. "I miss you guys, and this girl at school was being really mean and she said that it was weird how I called you both by your names, but I've wanted to call you guys mom and dad, I just thought you didn't want me to." My heart broke as she spoke to us and I sighed. Spencer placed a hand on my shoulder and I licked my lips.

"Baby, if you want to call us your mom and dad, then you can. And I will be going to your school to have a talk with your teacher, and when we both get back, we're going to go out for dinner. Just us three." I promised her and she sniffled once more. I heard Gemma in the background and Ellie spoke again.

"Okay, I have to go. I love you, by mom and dad." The girl said and my hear melted when she called us her parents, it made everything seem more real. I looked over at Spencer and he pulled me in for a hug. I sighed and looked up at him.

"I'm going to call the school. Set up a meeting with her teacher." I said and he kissed my forehead. "I got it. Don't worry about it, I'll call in an hour." He said and I nodded and we both walked back to the room where the team stood. Hotch looked over at me and I mouthed the words 'Ellie' and he nodded, understanding.

Everyone left and Spencer, Rossi and I walked into the room with Sammy as Anthony and the others spilt and went their own ways.

"Do you have any idea what the 'L' might stand for?" Rossi asked and Sammy's Occupational Therapist shook her head. His fingers started moving as he stopped rocking back and forth and I looked down.

"Is he trying to type?" Rossi asked and Spencer shook his head. "I don't think so." He said and I thought back to the piano in the main room. "There's a piano at his house. He's playing the keys." I said and the therapist looked up at me. "You want to take a 10 year old boy back to the crime scene where his father was shot at?" She asked  and Spencer looked up at her. "Sammy's trying to tell us something." He said and she stood up.

"Well, who's to decide whether to harm Sammy's well being is worth whatever information you may or may not get?" She asked and I crossed my hands over my chest. "Not you." I stated simply and she looked back over at me. "You don't have a say in this." Spencer says and she raised her eyebrow. "Do you have any kids, Dr. Reid?" She asked and he nodded placing his hand on his hip where his pistol was. "Yes, I do." He and she gave him a nod. "If something where to happen to you or the mother of your child would you want your child to go back to the crime scene?" She asked and I nodded. "If it meant finding whoever killed us then yes, I'd want our daughter to go back to the crime scene." He said pointing at me when he said 'us'. She scoffed and walked out of the room.

The next day I walked through the door of Sammy's house with Spencer, Rossi, Anthony, Lizzie Sparks, and his therapist. Rossi and Lizze began speaking and I watched as Sammy sat down on the piano.  Spencer asked the boy if it was okay if he sat down but he didn't give him an answer. Spencer began playing a scale and I smiled softly at the sight. Sammy mimicked the scale. Spencer went backwards down the scale and Sammy mimicked once more.

"I didn't know you could play, Reid." Rossi said and Spencer looked back up at Rossi. "I can't, well I never have before. But it's essentially all math. Hadley can play." He said and I shook my head, but he grabbed my hand and pressed my finger to the key.I yanked my hand back and glared at him.

"Sammy, how about you play this note for no." Spencer said hitting the 'E' key and then he hit the 'D' key. "And this one for yes." He said and Sammy hit the yes.

"Now Sammy, do you remember when the man came and took your parents away?" Spencer asked and Sammy played 'D'. Sammy looked up at me not making eye contact, but he grabbed my hand and placed it on the piano, and began playing 'D' repeatedly, and then began playing a classical piece I haven't heard of.

He moved over a bit and then grabbed Spencer's hand to play the piece. They both began playing. Spencer playing the lower octave, Sammy playing the medium and I pressed the keys playing the higher one. Some of my hair fell in my face as I replayed the piece of the music. I watched as Sammy's dominant hand moved across the keyboard and I moved in sync with him playing the same exact notes but in a different octave.

I looked over at Spencer watching as he was focusing on the notes and then Sammy stopped. Rossi and Lizzie walked away going up to his room and I looked down at Sammy. "Hey, Sammy, there's this piece I want to show you." I said and I sat down as Spencer got up and I began playing a piece called 'Only Hope'. Sammy soon figured it out and we began playing together. Sammy messed around with the keys for a bit and Spencer looked down at me as I was still sitting on the bench,

"I thought you said you don't play anymore." He said and I shrugged sheepishly. "I did- for your mother. Whenever we had lunch or just free time, she would read and I would play that song. She loved it." I said and he smiled when I brought up his mother. My phone began vibrating in my pocket and I saw Emily's number and I picked it up, stepping away from Spencer and Sammy.

"Yeah, what's up?" I asked and she sighed. "He's here. Ian Doyle is here." She said and I gulped looking back at Spencer with Sammy.

Bill Thomas turned out to be our UnSub. He was a fisherman who lost a lot of money because of the oil spill. The mother killed him, so that was another two kids that ended up without their father, along with Sammy, making it three.

Back in Virginia Spencer had gotten a piano and he set it up in the foyer and he began messing around with some keys already remembering what he learned from Sammy. Ellie was over at Rossi's and Spencer was going to pick her up. I sat in my car coming back from shopping when ,y phone dinged.

unknown: meet me at center pointe.

I looked up and then decided that I would end this once and for all. After arriving at the center pointe, I grabbed my gun and put it in my pocket. I walked out of my car and began walking around until someone called out to me.

"Psst. Over here, Hadley." The voice said and I walked over to the table and the man who had the newspaper up over his face pulled it down and gave me a wide smirk. " Hey, Hadley. I missed you." The voice said and when I looked to see who it was a face that I knew all to well looked at me and my heart stopped beating.

"What? Are you shocked it was me?" Matt asked giving me a wide smile and I gripped onto my glock harder.
