Can I call?"Hey Yujin," I breathe once she answers the phone. Relief starts to spread through me and I finally start to relax upon hearing her voice. The boys smile at me mischievously and start teasing me with faces. I roll my eyes, but end up smiling as well.
"You sound tired," she replies. "Are you guys still at the company?"
"Yeah. We're heading home soon," I tell her. "So where were you? What happened? Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm okay. My parents are in town, so I visited them. They arrived late on Monday and things were rushed so I could only tell Taehyun because he was first in my chats. Then I left my phone. And then I stayed with them the whole day."
"Your parents? Are they back from their business trip?" I ask, recalling that she mentioned their absences once before.
She sighs, which I recognize to be a troubled one. "I'll tell you when I see you again. It's a long story."
Our manager peaks through the door and tells us to get moving. I stand up and follow the boys out.
"Oh, okay. Well, I'm glad you're doing good. We thought you got sick or something." I then laugh lightly. "Funnily enough, just like last time, Hyeongjun wasn't at school either. Pretty coincidental."
She doesn't reply.
"Yujin? Are you still there?"
"Huh? Oh...yeah. I have to go. I'll see you soon Gyu. Tell the others I said hi." And without another word, she hangs up.
I look at my phone in confusion and disappointment. I've been wanting to talk and see her, and then this. A 3-minute and 47-second call.
"What's wrong?" Kai asks when he sees my expression.
I pocket my phone. "She suddenly needed to go," I tell him. "It's 11:23. What could she possibly need to do at this time?"
Yeonjun laughs. "Well, sleep."
"She could have said so. She just said she needed to go. Didn't even give a proper good bye," I mumble.
Soobin tilts his head, seemingly thinking about it. "Maybe it was something you said?"
We all step out of the elevator and walk across the lobby.
I try and think back on our conversation. I shake my head. "The last thing I mentioned was Hyeongjun being absent whenever she is."
Taehyun shrugs. "Maybe she didn't want to talk to you." I glare at him. He raises his hands defensively. "What? She's on her period. She said that happens. She suddenly doesn't like people or something like that."
I groan and Yeonjun slaps Taehyun's arm. "You could be a bit gentler. You know how he is when he's tired."
I raise my eyebrow at them as I pull open the car door. "Gentler? Why? What's wrong with me when I'm tired?"
Soobin yawns. "You're sensitive and cranky." No one disagrees.
"I am not. Prove it. Give me one time where I was sensitive and cranky because I was tired. Go on. I dare you." I glare at all of them.
