The forest we've been brought to is dense and I'm just glad we didn't have to climb over the mountains. Ukraine looks so different when it's the middle of the day, and hot, instead of mid afternoon and snowy. Ghost had laughed on the way here that those kids we saved would help us, which clearly lightened the mood but not for long. The captains, and by extension us, have been tasked with an extremely important joint mission.
Delta Force had gone ahead, getting to more of a recon position. They said they would push with us, though provide more of a secondary support role. Price makes sure that the main distraction force is settled then makes his way to where Soap, Ghost, and I are situated. The others start making their way to the east side of the base, while we wait on the west. I was told that the four of us would be directly seizing out target.
"Operation Kingfish is a go. Mission is kill or capture. I repeat. Kill or capture."
Soap glances back to Ghost and I after the confirmation comes through. We all give a slight nod and pick up our pace.
"141 is moving to standby positions." Soap states through comms. He knows that, despite our forces being split, that Price is just as much in position as we are.
"We count four targets patrolling the roof of the east and west barracks." An American soldier updates through comms. I remember being told that we would have sniper support from the Delta force, as well as some assistance from them. "Targets are locked in, Delta ready to engage, over."
"Copy Delta, you are free to engage. Let's stir up the hornets nest." Overlord replies. Soap, Ghost, and I sit with our backs to threes waiting on Delta's first shot.
Four semi suppressed sniper shots ring out, all from the same weapon. The four guards that were spotted are swiftly taken out. "Hornets nest has been stirred. Spector six-four you are clear to engage the playground." The same American sniper says calmly over comms.
"Spector six four is moving in. Light 'em up." The AC-130 pilot responds for his group. We soon see the plane overhead. Soon, they clear us to engage.
Price motions for us to follow him. He leads Soap, Ghost, and I towards one of the buildings to take cover. Soap fires upon and kills one stray soldier that could of gotten in our way. As we stack up by one of the brick buildings, Price requests the AC-130 to fire on the west barracks. We wait, quickly seeing it get blown up before our eyes.
Bullets wiz by Price's head as he peaks the corner to see if it's safe. Soap takes a step forward, firing a grenade launcher round in their direction. The group follows up by stepping out. Price requests more support as we push forward. Gunfire rings out on the east side of the compound, trying to stop anyone from fleeing.
As we move into one of the buildings, Price flings a grenade into one of the rooms. We stack up, killing stragglers that stumble out. Ghost walks forward, clearing the right side. I move to join him while the captains clear the left doors. Turning down hallways, we keep clearing doors and outstretching halls. Finally we get to the room we were looking for. I place then prime an explosive, quickly taking a step back. Price gets a nine-bang ready. After the door blows open, the nine-bang gets thrown in. When the flashes are done, we go in and clear the room. There were only three enemies in the room.
Ghost walks in first, confirming that the room is clear. Soap follows after him, kicking some of the bodies to ensure they're dead. Price puts a hand to his ear, "141 has arrived on target. There is no sign of Kingfish. I repeat there is no sign of Kingfish."
"Copy 141, collect any intel you can. If he's not there find out where he's going." Overlord replies.
Ghost and I look over things, starting to take pictures of documents since we wouldn't be able to bring it all back. Soap walks past something then stops. I glance up, noticing that he stopped by a corkboard. He almost seems to of froze.
"Price..." Soap starts, glancing towards him. "You need to see this... He's targeting Bravo Six..."
My gaze shifts to Price, who's eyes seem to widen in horror. Ghost starts to move back.
"Bomb! Get down!" He yells as we all jump backwards towards the door.
Ghost gets on his feet first, he grabs me as Price and Soap stumble out of the room. I shake off the explosion, then follow behind the other three. We start running to the evac point. I hear over comms, the AC-130 crew still providing support and the Delta Force boys already making their way out. The rest of the 141 says that they've safely gotten out after almost getting overwhelmed.
My group runs back through the treeline, now getting fired upon by enemies that we didn't know were there. More of them clearly showed up. We make a break to an open field that Nikolai's waiting for us in. An RPG sounds, then another, we watch in horror as Spector six-four gets shot down. Delta calls out behind us, quickly matching out pace as we hustle to the chopper. Mortars and other explosives land and go off around us as we run. Price commands us to keep moving as we go.
An explosive hits near Soap as we almost get to the chopper. I notice but get pushed away due to fire. Price stops by the chopper making sure everyone else gets on board then sees Soap is missing.
"Sir-" I try to get out.
"Ghost, Roach." Price spits out, running in front of us to cover us.
Ghost and I run to where Soap is lying. We each grab a side of his vest and start pulling him back towards the chopper. Price stays in the field, now commanding us to leave. Overlord's voice breaks through our comms telling us that we have to leave now. Soap weakly reaches for Price.
"We can't just-" Ghost gets cut off.
"Go now! I'll be fine!" Price yells as the enemies push the field, making their way towards him.
Nikolai closes the bay door and we watch as he's forced to fly us away. Soap tries to fight, pushing past Ghost and I, though we have to hold him down. A few tears of frustration stream down Soap's face as he watches us leave.
After a silent flight back to base, Ghost and I help Soap to the med bay then go to put our gear up. Ghost punches the wall after he takes his vest off.
"He should of moved. We shoulda-"
"Ghost..."
"We could of gotten him out Roach..."
"He sacrificed himself for us. We didn't have time-"
"There's always time!" He turns to face me. He has the same look of frustration that Soap had.
"We'll get him back, Ghost. I know we will."
Only later did we find out that we were set up. That Shepherd had known the whole time. Later was too late.
