The room was radiant, full of a crowd of dozens of teens, loud music blasting from the stereo speakers and shaking the furniture. The penthouse windows overlooked Central Park under the dark night sky, the lights from all the buildings around glowing.
Lana raised her beer to the air as the DJ played an old Green Day song. Her best friend, Kayla, did the same, screaming loudly with pleasure. Kayla had blonde hair and blue eyes, a cute nose, and a kind smile. She looked to Lana and said drunkenly, "Lana Herondale, I do believe this is the best party Manhattan has ever seen."
Lana laughed. She was short and thin, with long black, curly hair to the center of her back and pale blue eyes. Her nose was upturned like a pixy's and her lips were plump and full. She toasted her plastic, yellow cup and said, "I've been to better."
"Better than this?" Kayla giggled, "No. Way."
"Way," Lana said, and then burst into laughter with her friend. Kayla laughed so hard she spilled her drink a bit on the host, who coincidentally just-so-happened to be walking by.
"Oops," she said, stilling giggling uncontrollably, "Sorry 'bout that."
The host, whose name neither Lana nor Kayla could remember, smiling pleasantly and said, "No worries. There's no harm done."
"This party rocks!" Kayla shouted over the booming music.
"Thanks," he said, "But some people are going to have to leave."
"What?" Lana asked, "Why?"
"Apparently some neighbors called the police," he said disgustedly, "If I don't get rid of some of these people, I'm going to jail."
"We'll go," Kayla said, followed by a quiet, "We will?" from Lana. Kayla looked at her and growled, "Yes, we will." She grabbed Lana's arms and dragged her through the crowd of people to the front door.
"Why are we leaving?" Lana moaned, "It's not even midnight yet."
"You heard him," Kayla replied, putting her drink down on a coffee table. "Someone called the fuzz and people need to leave so he doesn't get into trouble."
"So?" Lana asked, "He could've just asked some of the losers to leave."
"Come on, Lana," Kayla said, and she turned around and stepped out the door.
After a moment's hesitation, Lana groaned dramatically and joined Kayla.
Down the hallway was an elevator. Kayla waited there for her and pressed the button to go to the lobby.
"I'm going to have such a hangover in the morning," Kayla said as she rubbed her eyes. "My parents are going to murder me."
"Same here," Lana said, "But I know my parents. They won't do anything about it."
