Day 23

Originally, I was going to write them breaking up after Scarletts death. But what happened if they stayed together because of others reasons? Things would have been so different.

67 hours before

Veronica sat with Judd as he signed Scarletts papers, officially declaring her dead. She couldn't feel anything, all her happiness had faded the moment she walked in on her best friend seizing on the ground. She kept her legs crossed and her eyes forward as the sounds of the pen made her nauseous.
"That's all," the doctor said and she stood up, the doctors eyes widened and she look down confused as to why the doctor was looking towards her pelvic region. Blood soaked through her pants. Her heart dropped just  as a pain zinged through her and she grabbed onto the table, a hand laid on her stomach as her face twisted and tears filled her eyes.
"No," she whispered as another pain hit.
"Please no," she cried as Judd held onto her arm.
"Ronnie," his voice cracked as he looked at the young women grimacing in pain.
"Don't call Tanner, I haven't" she stopped and groaned as the pain worsened and the doctor called for help. She couldn't help but scream in pain and grief as they gently wheeled her to a room, she knew what she happened. Yet her heart broke when they said it. Judd held her hand as she cried, she blamed herself for everything. If only she was more careful, if only she was on time.

"You never listen to me!" Veronica yelled, slamming her fists on the table while Tanner stood off towards the wall with an expression boarding on annoyance written across his face. He wanted to do nothing but scoop her up and hold her, yet she was drunk and full of anger as he tried to reason with her.
"It's not your fault Ronnie," he whispered, tears threatening to spill as she glared at him.
"Scarletts dead, it's my fault, she was my best friend and I was supposed to meet her at the lab but I was late." Her face changed and she stood up, stumbling a little causing Tanner to surge forward and grab her arm. To a normal person it would seem helpful, but for Veronica she flinched and ripped her arm away. Hurt flashed across Tanners face and he grimaced.
"Did you think I was about to hit you," his voice was deep, making Veronica turn away from him and fold her arms across her chest.
"Leave me alone Briggs,"
"Oh so now we're using last names,"
"ITS MY FAULT,"
"STOP IT VERONICA, SCARLETTS DEATH IS NOT YOUR FAULT,"
"I LOST OUT CHILD!" She spun around again, her eyes overflowed with tears as Tanner froze, the color drained from his face as she shook with anger.
"I lost out child," she repeated as her legs collapsed and she fell to the floor, sobs shook her body. She covered her face as he gently crouched down and wrapped his arms around her. She tried to shove him away, but he just hung on tighter.
"We were gonna be a family, I ruined it." She screamed in grief. Tanner gently picked her up and carried her into their bedroom, he could feel his heart shatter as the women he loved so dearly broke right in-front of him. He always saw Veronica as a strong, unshakeable person yet this was something he knew not the strongest in the world could bare.
"No, no you didn't Veronica." He said as he held her close to him, "why didn't you tell me? I could've helped you." He said as her sobs died down to whimpers.
"I didn't want you to be disappointed," she croaked and he sighed.
"I could never be disappointed in you. I married you for a reason and you could never do wrong." Veronica laid her head against his chest while her hand rested on her abdomen, a feeling of emptiness filled her.
"I- I just found out two days before, but then we got the case and then Scarlett-" she stopped and shook her head "I started bleeding when I had to held Judd sign the papers at the hospital. I was so numb I didn't realize until the pain hit." Her lip trembled as Tanner held her tighter.
"I love you," he gently kissed her forehead and laid her down, putting the sheets over her before laying down and putting his arm over her slim build.
"I will always love you."
