"Why don't you trust me?" Your voice sounded quiet over the vibrating speakers that laid sporadically around the house.
"I do trust you. I just don't trust other guys." Ethan rolled his eyes as he fed you his bullshit answer again.
You scoffed as soon as the lie fled from his mouth. Every time you went out, he wanted you in a skirt but not too short to be considered slutty and not too long to seem prudish.
If you went to a party, he told you whether you could drink or not. Honestly, you had been sick of how he treated you for a while, but you were too scared to break it off. He had never hit you but with how he was always defensive, never say never.
You argued back all of the times you couldn't do something just because he said so. Ethan's hand went up quickly but stood there watching you flinch at the act.
He slowly lowered his hand, "It's over," Ethan stated and bumped shoulders with you as he left.
You tried to take in deep breaths, but you were always found inhaling cigarette smoke that floated through the air of the party. With tears about to overflow, you made your way outside.
A painful longing began to form in your chest when you thought back to the good parts of your past relationship as he was the first person to show a serious interest in wanting to get to know you.
He started off as a co-worker at the local diner in town. You harmlessly flirted with him when your shifts crossed paths and got to know who he was. Ethan took the first step into friendship territory when he invited you to see a movie with his friends.
It was a terrifying movie, and you would never forget how he was there to comfort you through the jump scares and gore. It morphed into hanging out every Saturday that you both had off and if the other did work then you would pay a small visit.
Your friendship transformed into relationship territory after he dropped you off and confessed his feelings were more than platonic. Ethan was your first kiss, and you remember running straight to Bev to squeal like little schoolgirls on a playground.
However, soon you found out that Ethan didn't treat his romantic relationships with the same care as his friendships. He was always busy with other people, didn't care about your opinions, and always lied.
"Hey," A meek voice belonging to your friend Bill cut through the silence that filled the outdoors.
You could only see the outline of the losers club come to comfort you as your tears blurred your vision. Mike reached you first and pulled you into a group hug. Your friends kept mumbling about how your ex was a jerk and that you're better off.
That night Bev stayed the night to take your mind off of the breakup. Honestly, you never had time to think about it cause, after that, the losers made sure you were never alone.
They didn't want to see you ever get hurt again. One of them would constantly be talking to you so your mind didn't wander, they kept snacks close by when you were hungry and kept you away from Ethan.
Every night there was one of your friends sleeping over at your house. You weren't complaining, but sometimes you needed your personal space.
Tonight you thought that it was finally time that no one would barge through your front door and jump into your bed. Or no one would hop into your shower claiming you had the best water and then stay the night.
Though you were proven wrong when you heard Eddie struggling to climb up the tree next to your bedroom window. He lightly tapped on your window after trying to lift it and realised that it was locked.
You sat on your bed, shaking your head while watching him. You moved to sit on the floor in front of the window when he motioned you to come towards him.
"What's wrong?" His voice was muffled by the windowpane, so you lifted the window since the screen was still there to keep him out.
"I just need some time alone."
"But you like having someone sleep next to you, it brings you comfort," Eddie argued, thinking back to sleepovers where you would always cuddle close with anyone that laid next to you.
"I'm a big girl Eds. I think I can handle a small breakup." You said, using the nickname you knew Richie reserved the right to.
Eddie made a face at the nickname, "I know but I'm supposed to stay with you-"
You cut Eddie off with a pleading look.
"I'll see you at school tomorrow, okay." You slowly lowered the window down and walked back to your bed.
Defeated, Eddie slinked back down the tree and walked out into the night. You were left shocked, wondering how that actually worked. Emptiness filled your head as you stared up at your ceiling in the darkness.
Breakup, wow. You didn't have much time to process what had happened weeks before. Your heart hurt when you realised that there would be no more pizza dates on his roof.
You let out a shaky breath and took in the fact that you didn't have anyone special to run and tell good news, no matter how small.
"I found a pencil on the ground in English class today." A bright smile was prominent on your face when telling Ethan.
"It's good to hear you had a great day bubs." Ethan produced the same level of excitement while wrapping you in a tight hug.
You would never hear him call you bubs again. You didn't know when you started to cry, but the tears were falling, and you weren't sure when they would stop. Probably never, but that was what it was like to have your heartbroken weeks ago and just now realise how much you really lost.
