A/n: Hello everyone! Sorry for the mini hiatus, I've been super busy taking care of my grandparents ever since they caught COVID. My grandma's all better, but my grandpa is in the hospital with pneumonia that he caught while he had COVID. Life is a little hectic, but I'll do my best to update chapters! So the basis of this one-shot is that you (The reader) Are sent back in time after you watched an episode of The Last Kingdom. You're thrust back into the time about a month he returned from being a slave. (I will be taking full liberties with the storyline and changing it how I want, which means Gisela isn't part of the picture in the story) The whole one-shot is basically you finding small ways to better his life with your knowledge of things in the future. (You were an herbalist.)
Begin~
You sighed as you took a sip of your chamomile tea as you shut your laptop and got up to go your pajamas on. You gulped down the last of the tea and sighed, setting the cup in the sink and going to your room. You walked in and shrugged all your clothes off, pulling a loose, white, long-sleeved shirt out, and some black leggings and socks. You touched your necklace, smiling as you thumbed the small gold engraving of Mjolnir.
You hummed as you tossed your pills into your mouth and swallowed, grateful for melatonin existing. With a soft sigh, you crawled into bed and covered up, shutting your eyes and drifting off to sleep. When you woke up, you were not in your own bed.
You shot up, taking in a sharp breath of air, whipping your head around. You were in a stable, snuggled up to a small baby horse, whose mother stood nearby, eating hay. It was early in the morning, the air crisp, and wet, the sky gray and dull. You stood up shakily, brushing the straw off of your clothes. You spotted a worn pair of leather boots that you slipped on, seeing that the street was extremely muddy. You stepped out quietly, looking around carefully assessing your surroundings. Houses were lining the street and the harsh stench of feces permeating the air.
You wrinkled your nose and slowly walked out into the street, beginning to walk down it. When you saw what was at the end of the street you froze in shock. Uhtred of Bebbanburg stood at the end of the street, talking to his man, Sihtric. Sihtric noticed you, and pointed, causing Uhtred to turn, furrowing his brows in question. You cursed, about to duck back into the stable until Uhtred shouted
"You! Woman, come here!" You froze, pointing to yourself questioningly. "Of course! Who else could I be talking to?" He asked rhetorically. You laughed nervously, walking forward towards him, lowering your head in hopes that he didn't ask too many questions.
"What is your name woman?" He asked
"(y/n), lord."
"Where are you from (Y/n)? Where is your husband?" He asked. You blanked for a moment, before realizing you wore a Dane pendant and your hair was braided. He thought you were married.
"Oh...my husband is dead. lord." You whispered softly, hoping to quickly leave the conversation.
"Dead? Was he killed in battle?"You nodded, still avoiding eye contact.
"May he feast in Valhalla." Uhtred murmured, patting your head. "Do you have anywhere to go? Any land that he left to you?"
You shook your head again, glad that he was believing your story. "Come with me and my men. The king has just gifted me land. We will take care of you, should you swear to me." You looked up, nervously chuckling.
"Would that really be the wisest lord? I'm a stranger and-"
"Of course it's fine! Sihtric, fetch her a horse, we'll be leaving tomorrow morning!"
