Tae and I sat in the shade on the beach of that deserted island while he politely tried to answer all of my questions. We were there for quite some time, until the sun started getting lower in the sky.
“Kookie. It’s almost sunset. Remember what I said about our kind being out of water too long past sunset?” He nodded. “I have to get you back.”
He stood up and grabbed my hand, and started walking into the water.
“Will I be able to breathe underwater again?” I quickly asked, already waist deep.
“Yes, I believe so. If not, I can always kiss you again.” He winked and continued back into the water. He dove in the rest of the way, and came back up grabbing my hand again, ready to swim back home.
This time I tried to keep my eyes open, watching him tear through waves and past schools of fish, around jutting coral… his tail gloriously showing it’s strength. It’s a beautiful mix of blues and greens, beautifully blending in with the surrounding environment, but shimmering in the sun’s rays. His silver hair, wavy in the water. And his eyes, when they look directly at me, shine like a pair of stars.
I was completely captivated, and not paying attention when we stopped and he suddenly grabbed me by my waist and lifted me back up on the end of the pier.
I quickly looked around me, startled at the sudden action, and worried people might have seen me just appear on the pier. I looked back toward the water beside my feet toward Tae.
“You okay?” he asked.
“...Yeah. Um… can I see you again tomorrow?”
He smiled and lifted himself halfway out of the water to reach my lips. He gave me a quick kiss and playfully dove back into the water for the evening.
I sat there for the rest of the sunset, thinking about everything I saw, thinking about him. Do I honestly have feelings for a merman? Is it even possible for us to have any kind of relationship? I mean, he answered most of my questions about that subject, but I could tell there was more he wasn’t telling me.
