“Kookie.  I… I’m sorry.  I don’t regret meeting you, but sometimes I wonder if we shouldn’t have let our feelings progress like this.  Then we wouldn’t be hurt.”

“Tae…  I know…”  he didn’t let me continue.

“We’re too different in ways that truly matter.  It's too difficult for us.  For my family.  And yours.”

“Tae… we belong together.  I don’t want to leave you.  There has to be a way to make it work.  I’ll find a way.  I… I don’t want to give up.”  I quickly moved toward him and kissed him, hoping to change his mind.

He broke the kiss, and not saying anything, looking off to the side.  Thinking.

“Tae, i’ll only be happy with you.  There is no one else I want.  I don’t care where we are, or what we do.  As long as we’re together, i’m happy.  Please…  Tae…”  I pleaded.  Don’t leave me…

Still looking off to the horizon, he finally spoke, “it’s permanent.”

“What?”

He sighed, looking down toward me.  “It’s permanent.  Forever.  No going back.  You’ll eventually have to say goodbye to everything and everyone you know.  You can’t possibly understand the consequences of something like this.”

I tried to process what he was saying.  I don’t really have any friends.  I don’t really care about my job.  But I would have to leave my family?  I know we hardly see each other, but they are still my family.

"Even family?"

"Everyone."

But thinking about having to choose between them and Tae, made my heart ache.  Mostly thinking about not feeling this feeling anymore.  His warmth, his laughter…

I can’t do it.  I can’t leave him.

I grabbed his hand and said, “I understand that you would be with me.  That’s all I could ever hope for.  Give me a few days.  Then meet me at the pier.”

For the first time in my life, I felt like I was moving forward.
