I hugged my younger self tighter. I felt his damp body, his racing heart.
"Just wait a little longer. Hold on a little longer. When you're older you're going to make such wonderful friends. They'll help you become a better person. I promise things will get better. Just keep being strong for just a little longer."
I hugged myself tighter. I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. As I hugged myself tighter I couldn't help crying a little.
I woke up. How long had I been asleep? I got up and wiped my eyes. I looked up at the sky. I was in the arboretum. I'd fallen asleep here.
The sun was bright enough for me to guess it was around midday. It was quiet. There wasn't a single trace of the rain that had fallen earlier.
I spotted the exit in the distance and made my way out the arboretum.
