Silence ensued.
This immediately caused panic amongst the twins, Sam and Bruce. "Where is he?" Sam asked, looking over at the scientist.
All of a sudden, before Bruce could get out a reply, Steve reappeared and retracted his helmet.
Artemis looked at the blonde soldier with tears forming in her hazel gaze while her sister and Sam looked on in both shock and relief, with the para-rescue silently questioning what had happened.
"What?" Steve asked, looking at his friends questioning expressions before he shifted his gaze to Artemis with a loving smile. "I can't leave my girl behind." He said and made his way over to his teary-eyed fiancé, pulling her into his tight embrace.
Azar shook her head with a smile etching its way onto her face. "Steven Rogers, you son of a bitch.." She muttered before she turned to Bucky, who wore a small grin. "You knew this would happen." She stated.
"Maybe." The dark haired super soldier replied which earned him a soft swat to his chest.
"I thought I'd have to do damage control." She said, rolling her eyes with a smile.
"Poor Artemis." Sam mumbled which earned him a swat upside the head.
"Hey, I can be comforting towards people!" The brunette argued. "If I like them." She added.
Before the para-rescue could get out another word, Steve called out to him. "Hey, Sam. Take a walk with me." The blonde super soldier said with a smile.
Sam arched an eyebrow in question, looking towards the couple. "Don't look at me." The Kree halfling protested with a shrug.
"Go ahead." Bucky said with a nod, smiling at the para-rescue.
"But--"
"Just get your ass over there, Wilson, before I drag you over there myself." Azar said, cutting the para-rescue off and shoved him forward.
"Okay! Okay, geez.. You're so bossy." He mumbled and passed Artemis as he made his way over to Steve.
Artemis stood beside her sister and brother-in-law as they watched the scene unfold before them.
"He's getting kicked off isn't he?" The younger Kree halfling said which made both her twin and husband shake their heads in amusement.
"So what did you want to talk about?" Sam asked wearily. "You're not kicking me off the team are you?"
"Of course not." Steve replied with a chuckle. "After I put the stones back, I thought, maybe I should try some of that life that Tony was telling me to get."
"Wait.." The para-rescue said slowly. "You're leaving the team?" He asked which earned him a nod.
"I could have went back and had that life with Peggy." The blonde said and looked over to the trio who were watching them, his gaze landing on Artemis. "But I couldn't just leave Artemis.. That ring was my promise to her and that I'd never leave her. She took a 100 year old man and made everything seem a little less lonely. Peggy was my first love but.. Artemis is my last and I love her.. More than anything."
Sam couldn't help but smile through Steve's speech. After going through loss, war and many battles, Steve deserved a shot at a normal life, especially with the older Kree halfling.
"Well I'm happy for you." He said. "Only thing bumming me out is the fact that I have to live in a world without Captain America." He added.
Steve smiled at the para-rescue as he began removing his shield from his arm and handing it over.
Needless to say, Sam was shocked. "Wha--"
"Try it on." The soldier said with a smile, cutting him off before he could utter another word.
Sam frowned and looked over to the trio, each of them nodding in encouragement.
He turned back to Steve and hesitantly took the shield, sliding his arm through the straps.
"How does it feel?" Steve asked with a smile.
"Like it's someone else's." The para-rescue replied, shifting his gaze from the shield to the blonde soldier.
"It isn't." The super soldier said.
Sam let out a shakey breath as he tried to hold back his tears. "Thank you." He said. "I'll do my best."
Steve smiled. "That's why it's yours." He said, shaking hands with the para-rescue.
The two began making their way towards Artemis, Azar and Bucky. "So, what are you gonna do now?" Sam asked and gave a small smirk as he found Steve staring at his fiancé.
"Well, for starter's.." The blonde soldier drew out as he wrapped his arm around his partner's waist. "I'm gonna marry my girl." He said with a smile. "And we'll take it from there."
"Bad move, Gramps." Azar said. "God help the world with Sam as Captain America." She added, teasing Sam who glared at her playfully.
"Have a little faith, Azar." The para-rescue said.
"Oh, I have faith." The younger twin replied, making her sister and the super soldiers laugh during hers and Sam's playful banter.
