Five Years Later (2023)

"Rebecca Marie Barnes."

The four year old girl giggled softly, covering her mouth with her hand in attempt to not give away her hiding spot in a game of Hide-and-seek with her mother.

It went silent, causing the little girl to quietly crawl out from her hiding spot and peek around the corner.

"Gotcha!" Azar said with a grin as she picked her daughter up into her arms and began tickling her sides.

"Momma, stop!" Rebecca giggled through her mother's attack before it soon ended, the brunette pressing a kiss to her cheek and putting her down.

"I think that's enough of Hide-and-seek today. What would you like for lunch?" Azar said, crouching down in front of Rebecca.

"Nuggets!" The little girl replied with a bright smile.

"I didn't hear the magic word." The mother teased playfully.

"Please, Mommy! Please!" Rebecca yelled, jumping up and down which made Azar giggle.

"Okay." She smiled and stood up, making her way to the kitchen to prepare her daughter's lunch.

While Rebecca ate, Azar began tidying up. As she picked up the toys that lied scattered across the floor, her daughter's voice caught her attention. "Mommy, how come I don't have a Daddy like all the other girls and boys?"

The mother's heart broke at the question.

She slowly made her way over to her daughter and kneeled down in front of her. "You do have a Daddy, my love." She replied.

"Then where is he?" Rebecca asked, her ocean eyes meeting her mother's brown.

"Something happened to Daddy.." Azar began to explain as she tried to word it so that Rebecca could understand. She didn't think she'd have to tell her daughter so soon but Rebecca was a very smart girl, she noticed a lot of things.

"He's in a better place now and he would have adored you. He's always with you, my love, right here." She said pointing to her chest where her heart is.

Rebecca smiled at her mother to which Azar returned it and kissed her head softly. "Finish your lunch."

Later that day, Rebecca sat at the table with her colouring book and crayons

Later that day, Rebecca sat at the table with her colouring book and crayons. Azar placed a cup of juice next to her and kissed the top of her head, running her fingers through her daughter's blonde locks.

She began packing away the dishes when a knock at the door sounded. Throwing the dish cloth over her shoulder, the brunette made her way to the door and opened up to find Steve on the other side.

"Hey, Azar." The blonde super soldier greeted.

"Steve, hey." She replied as the sound of little feet running across the floor was heard.

"Uncle Stevie!" Rebecca yelled as she ran over to the soldier and hugged his leg, causing him to chuckle.

"Hey there, little miss." Steve said, smiling down at his niece.

"Come colour in with me." The four year old said which made the the blonde smile softly.

"Actually, Beck, I came here to speak to your Mom and--"

"I wasn't asking." Rebecca said, cutting her uncle off and pulled him towards the dining room.

Steve had no choice but to follow the four year old, Azar smirking at the two as she closed the door behind the soldier.

"So what did you want to talk about?" Azar asked as she placed a cup of coffee beside Steve who sat colouring in with Rebecca

"So what did you want to talk about?" Azar asked as she placed a cup of coffee beside Steve who sat colouring in with Rebecca.

"Thanks." Steve said and took a sip of his coffee. Placing the cup down, he looked at the brunette who sat across from him. "We might have a way to bring everyone back."

Azar closed her eyes with a soft sigh. "Steve--"

"Just hear me out, Azar." The blonde cut her off.

The woman looked at him skeptically before she nodded for him to continue.

Steve began to explain Scott's plan that was now heard for the third time today.

"And who is going to take care of Beck?" She asked.

"Pepper. That way Beck can play with Morgan." Steve replied.

"And Tony?" She asked about her best friend. "How does he feel about this?"

"He doesn't think it's a good idea going for this second chance." Steve said with a sigh. "He's scared and with good reason."

"Cap, it's a lot going into this." She confessed looking towards Rebecca. "I'm a mom now and I have responsibilities.. Don't get me wrong, I want Bucky and Artemis back more than anything but right now.. Your odds aren't looking too good and I'm not about to abandon my daughter like Carol did to my sister and I."

"Well, maybe think it over." The blonde replied.

Azar nodded softly with a small smile.

"I gotta get going." Steve announced while standing up, which made Rebecca look up at her uncle with a pout.

"No!" The four year old said which made Steve smile at his niece.

"I'll be back soon, Beck." He said.

"You better, mister." Rebecca replied sassily while pointing her finger at him.

Steve chuckled and began walking to the door alongside Azar. Reaching the door and opening it, the brunette placed her hand on his arm and stopped him.

"I will think about it." She said.

Steve nodded with a small smile. "That's all I ask." He said before leaving.

Azar closed the door behind him and leaned against it. With a soft sigh, she closed her eyes as her eyes raced with the possibilities.

Could it work?
