Instead of a wolf, I saw a guy standing casually.
"Y-you're a.."
"Werewolf. Yes." He turned and looked at me.
That term again... guess I'll have to get used to it.
"But how? I thought I was the only one."
"I don't think I can explain the how but you're not the only one." He gestures to himself. "Clearly."
"Wait how can you even understand me right now?" I asked still in disbelief.
"Well, that's because we are the same. As werewolves, we can understand each other despite what form we take." He sat up straight and pointed at the cabin.
"There are a few clothes in there if you want to change." I went in and found some clothes that fit meeting him back outside. He looked at me and sat on a stump in silence.
"You never answered how? Were you an experiment too? How long have you been a werewolf?"
"Wow, you just don't shut up do you?" He slightly smiled.
"I was a lab rat as well some guy turned me into this. He gave me some sort of shot which made me pass out. Next thing I know I was a wolf. I knew that he planned for something else to happen but I tried attacking him and escaped."
"The same thing happened with me except the lab exploded and I didn't attack him... did he not try looking for you after?"
"No. Given my aggression, he probably knew I would kill him if he did. So I decided to live my life as a wolf ever since."
"What was his name?"
"He never told me." He shrugged. "If you didn't attack him as well then what did you do?"
"I just stayed and he asked me a few questions but then I overheard him on the phone talking about doing something that could kill me... so I ran."
"That's good. When you left did you happen to go to the city?"
"Yes. Why?"
He sighed, sat down, and rubbed his face with his hands. "Please tell me you're not staying with humans."
"Well, when I escaped the lab I was pretty torn up. I slept knocked out in some alleyway. Then I woke up at a girl's house. She patched me up practically saving me."
"She doesn't know about you does she?"
I nodded slowly.
"It's not like I trusted her immediately. I couldn't turn back into a wolf until she got home. That's when I figured out how easy it was."
"You need to get out of there. you can't stay with her." He said firmly.
"I-I know..."
"You have no idea how hard that man is looking for you. There are both 'lost dog' and 'missing child' posters everywhere."
"I know I'm planning on leaving soon."
"Where?"
"I don't know but I'll figure it out."
"Listen I could help you. You can't stay here in this forest or in the city it's too risky. I can take you to a place but we have to leave tomorrow the sooner the better."
Oddly he seemed more nervous and panicked than I.
"Tomorrow? How far is this place?"
"Should take us a couple of days."
All I could think about at the moment was Laine.
"Why can't I just stay here?"
Mason looked at me as if I had asked the dumbest question in the world.
"Do you want to get caught? There are people all over the place wanting that reward you'd be lucky to last a week."
I looked down in silence.
"Well?" He continued.
What he was saying was true there was no way I'd stay out of the radar by myself and if Laine gets caught keeping me she could get into some trouble.
"So tomorrow?" I sat next to him and buried my face in my hands.
"Yeah..."
"Look there she is!" We heard a voice not too far out.
"Shit come on!" He grabbed my hand and pulled me while we ran.
"Hurry they are getting away!" A man's voice said.
Mason jumped in the air and transformed, I did the same. Then Mason made a turn and I couldn't see him. All of a sudden he grabbed the skin of my neck with his teeth, pulling me under an old log. The entrance was small but I squeezed through, inside was surprisingly roomy for two wolves.
We heard footsteps coming closer and we saw through the hole feet running by. There were at least six people.
"That was close," I said.
"Yeah no kidding, be prepared to leave tomorrow okay? You better get going before they come back."
"Okay but umm..."
"What?"
"I don't know where to go from here."
He let out a chuckle. "Where is your wolf sense of direction?" He tapped my head with his paw. "Come on I'll take you back."
----------------------------------------------
"Well here's my stop you should be able to find your way from here correct?"
"Yes I'm not that stupid... so do you ever go anywhere as a human?"
He turned and looked up at the sky, it was dark, and I spent my whole day with him without realizing it. "Nope... I prefer being a wolf. Today was the first time I've transformed into a human in a long time."
"Why?"
"My life sucked, being a wolf was a way to escape it all." He continued looking at the sky.
"How am I supposed even supposed to trust you? I only met you yesterday."
"I guess it just means that you like me." He laughed but before I could say anything he continued. "You have a point, but then again you're staying at a girl's house and you've only just met her no?" I looked down and back up, he was gone.
If he thinks I like him he is surely mistaken. Just the thought made me scrunch my nose in disgust.
