Before we walked into the doctor's office I grabbed Kevin's hand and squeezed it tightly. He gave me a quick glance and squeezed my hand back. I pushed open the door and walked fully into the room with Kevin right behind me. Oliver and Amber were already there.
"Look who finally decided to show up," Amber mumbled loud enough for me to hear. I cut my eyes at her and willed myself to keep quiet. Kevin's fingers gently grazed my back in an attempt to keep me calm. Doctor Grant walked into the room. He greeted us, but not with the same enthusiasm he had given us the first time we had met. Were my eyes deceiving me or was he barely making eye contact with Oliver? Kevin noticed it as well and nudged me. I gave him a look to let him know I saw it too.
Dr. Grant cleared his throat. "Okay. Seeing that everyone's here, let's get started. I don't see any reason to keep anyone here longer than what they want to be." He fumbled with the results. "Let's see here," he said, his eyes moving slowly over the paper. I watched anxiously as his mouth moved in silence. He paused and adjusted his glasses before speaking.
"It says here that Kevin Davis is the biological father of this baby." He looked up regrettably at Oliver and then gave a more softer expression to Kevin. "Congratulations Mr. Davis. Looks like you're gonna be a dad after all." With that, Dr. Grant firmly shook Kevin's hand and quickly turned to leave.
"Oh my goodness! Baby," I said gleefully turning to Kevin. I pulled him into a hug. "Can you believe it?" I laughed. His arms were wrapped around my waist as he gave me a gentle squeeze of gratitude.
"I'm so happy right now." By the way his voice sounded I knew he was smiling.
"Me too," I mumbled into his shirt. As we clung to each other I could feel the cool air of Oliver's and Amber's body brushing past us, both unsmiling and bemused. The door slammed shut and we pulled away from one another. We were smiling so hard our cheeks began to hurt and then unable to keep it in, we laughed. Our hearts were so full. We were bursting with joy. I cupped Kevin's face in my hands and stared intently into his brown-speckled eyes.
   "We're having a baby," I beamed.
Kevin scooped me up. "It looks like we are!"
...
"So," Janelle started, "What did Oliver's face look like when the test results were read?"
"Girl, I couldn't even tell you. We didn't even give him a second glance. We just immediately hugged each other. We were so relieved. I think we both sighed when we hugged each other."
Janelle grinned. "Aw. I am so happy for you guys. Looks like y'all might be getting a happy ending after all."
"Whew," I said playfully wiping my forehead, "finally." We laughed.
"So, how are y'all gonna celebrate?" Josh said butting in. "I know y'all negro's finna do something extra," he teased.
"Yes, you know how we do!" I laughed. "We're going to drive down for his mom's birthday party, see his family at their new home in Dallas, and officially show off our baby bump!" I cheered. "We're going down next weekend."
"About time!" Josh replied. "Kevin done met nearly all of your family and you ain't met none of his."
"I know, but that's only because they had all that crazy family drama last year and then I had all of my crazy family stuff around the same time. It just wasn't the right time. Now everybody's in a good place and we're ready to move forward." I looked between Josh and Janelle. "Kevin and I are just ready to let the past go, prepare for our daughter, and get married. After all of what I put us through, I'm tired. I don't want to continue life that way. I don't want any more drama. I'm through with it." I pushed myself further back into my seat. "I was really a mess y'all."
"Girl, don't we know it," Josh joked. "You was just nasty. Out here being fast. A couple times I almost ran and got my belt."
My mouth hung open. "Jooosh," I laughed. Janelle was in the corner cracking up.
"Aht aht. Don't Josh me," he grinned. "You was out here being a hoe and we all agreed!"
Janelle couldn't stop laughing. "Daaang Josh! You ain't have to call me out like that!"
"Look boo," Josh snickered in between breath's, "You met Jo Ann. I was raised to call a spade, a spade."
"You right," I chuckled, "She don't have no cut cards and neither do you," I said matter-of-factly.
"That's right," he agreed.
Once we finally calmed ourselves down from all of our loud laughter, Josh looked at me. He gave me the most warm and sincerest smile. I cocked my head to the side and smiled back. "What?"
He grabbed my hand. "All jokes aside Lys, I am really proud of you. You took responsibility for the pain that you caused. You owned your stuff and worked hard to make things right. I have walked a lot of different paths in my short 25 years of life, and let me tell you that that is by far one of the hardest things to do." He dabbed under his eyes. "Come here," he said standing up, "give me a hug." I stood up and let Josh envelop me with his warm embrace. After a few seconds Janelle hopped up from the floor. "Group hug!" She yelled. Josh tried to protest, but it was too late. Janelle's arms were wrapped widely around us as we stumbled to the floor. "Oh. My. Goodness. Janelle. I hate you so much," Josh mumbled under the weight of Janelle and I. We burst out laughing.
"Love yooou!" Janelle replied.
"Go to hell," he said playfully, and then he burst out laughing too.
