At Rita's party on Sunday I sat anxiously awaiting news about Kevin and his brother. I figured there would be good news, but where was he? He should have been here by now.
"Honey relax," Rita said walking up to me, "I just got off the phone with Kevin and he is on his way here with his brother!" She said matter-of-factly. "Everything went well," she winked.
"Really," I grinned. Rita beamed and nodded her head yes.
"Now, I know that you're pregnant and can't drink, but it's my party and I wanna see you getting down with the rest of us," she laughed. "I brought you over a virgin margarita. I think you and the baby will like it," she grinned. "Try it." Rita held out the drink for me to taste. I took a sip and it was delicious. When my face lit up Rita yelled over to the bartender, "it's a hit jerry," then she sat the drink down on the table and pulled me out of my seat. "Now, I want you to come dance with me. It's not every day that a woman gets to dance with her daughter-in-law and grand baby at her 55th birthday party," she winked. "Come on."
As I danced with Rita and mingled with some new faces, I felt so complete. I had Kevin and our baby, and my family, and now his. This was turning out to be the perfect weekend.
"Hey baby," Kevin said sneaking up behind me. I smiled to myself and turned around.
"Hey. I was waiting for you. How'd it go?"
"Better than good," he smiled. "Come on. I want you to meet him." Kevin grabbed my hand and pulled me off of the dance floor. When we got to his brother, Q, along with some of Kevin's family members, were already there introducing their self to him. When Kevin's brother saw us approaching he look relieved. Q saw us and left without a word. Kevin and I were pleasantly surprised.
"Kyren, this is my fiancée Alyssa and Alyssa this is my twin brother, Kyren."
"And this is your niece," I said jokingly as I pointed to my belly. "Wow. Y'all look so much alike. It's scary," I said looking between Kevin and Kyren. "Is it okay if we hug," I asked him.
Kyren nodded his head. Yeah it's fine," he smiled. When we hugged I could feel myself getting emotional.
"You okay," he asked.
"Yes," I said dabbing under my eyes. "I think it's the hormones or either my baby is just really happy to meet you," I laughed. "But nah forreal it's a little bit of me too," I smiled. "I'm really happy that you and Kevin finally had the chance to meet. I know this means everything to him."
"Thank you. I really appreciate that," he smiled. "I'm glad I have my brother back."
..
Later that evening, as the party was winding down Q approached me outside the bathroom door.
"Hey. I'm glad I caught you," she said.
"You are?" I asked skeptically.
"Yeah," She nodded. "I wanted to talk to you."
"Uh, okay. What's up?"
"Um. I was about to head out, but before I did, I wanted to apologize about my behavior towards you this weekend and give you an explanation. I," she hesitated, "used to like Kevin way back when and when those feelings weren't returned I didn't take it too well, obviously." She laughed nervously. "Anyway. I can see that he really loves you and that you are perfect for him. I'm sorry to have ever questioned that. I was wrong. Moving forward, I wish you both the best in your marriage and I hope that you two have a beautiful and healthy baby."
"Wow. Um. That was so...unexpected and big of you. I really appreciate it. Thank you."
"Don't mention it," she said as she turned to walk away.
"Queen," I called out after her. She turned around. "Love the name. It really suits you."
"It was only a matter of time," she chuckled. With a warm smile she thanked me and made her way out the door.
"Alyssa! There you are," Ashley said walking over to me. "Kevin was looking for you."
"Oh. Why didn't he just call me?" I asked. Ashley shrugged her shoulders. "Good question."
"Well where is he now?"
"I think he was on his way to the gazebo."
"What? Why is he going to the gazebo?" I looked at Ashley for a response, but instead of giving me one she just smiled at me.
"Why don't you go find out," she winked.
"Ash, what is going on?" I asked suspiciously. Ashley sucked her teeth.
"Girl, go to the gazebo and find out," she laughed.
"Okay. I'm going," I smiled.
Each step I took towards the gazebo, the pathway lit up. By the time I reached the first step the gazebo was completely illuminated with lights and beautiful decorations. Kevin was standing there with a ring in his hand.
"Kevin. What is going on," I grinned. He smiled back at me and cut right to the chase.
"I know I already told you that I wanted to marry you and you agreed, but I wanted to do the proposal the right way," he smiled. Alyssa Victoria James," he said getting down on one knee, "I love you with everything in me. I swear I do. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you and only you. Will you do me the honor of marrying me. Forreal this time," he grinned.
"Oh my goodness! Kevin! Of course!" I beamed.
"So, is that a yes?"
"Yes! It's a yes!" I laughed. "Yes!"
"She said yes," Kevin yelled. All of a sudden there was an uproar of cheers coming from behind me. I turned around and all of his family was standing in the pathway cheering us on.
"Oh my goodness!" I said tearing up. Kevin turned me around to face him and planted a passionate kiss on my lips.
"I love you Alyssa."
"I love you too baby daddy!"
