Kawaii~Chan's Secret

Back at the house, Zane's skin seems to be getting redder by the second, Garroth is fussing over him nervously, while I'm shaking silently trying to contain my bout of giggles.

"Ow, ow, ow ow t--OW! Uggh!" Zane groans.

"Zane! Oh my Irene!" Garroth mourns. "I'm so so soooo sorry! I didn't think you were going to turn out THIS bad!"

"I did!" I volunteer.

"Ugggh!" Zane repeats. "It's all right Garroth. It's not your fault for this. I was the dummy who fell asleep."

"In your defense, it is pretty easy to doze off in the warm sun." I say fairly.

"Yes, but I should have been watching him!" Garroth insists.

"We were relaxing and I just happened to relax... a little too much." Zane says.

"Still!" Garroth prods. "I was the one who suggested to go tanning in the first place."

"It looks... like it really hurts." I say nervously, approaching my tomato brother.

"Yeah... it does." Zane admits. "What's even worse---everything feels so hot and cold at the same time! It's like my body is in a temperature frenzy---and I can't even control it!"

"Uhh, um, um here! Let's try this!" Garroth produces a blue bottle of scented lotion and applies some to Zane's leg.

"AH! THAT HURTS!" Zane yells.

"OH NO---ZANE, I'M SORRY---" Garroth yelps, producing a new white container of vaseline. "How bout this?"

"Ow, ow OW!" Zane yells.

"Gg---uhhh, let's try both of them together!"

"Garroth, no, that's---" I try, but Zane is already yelling in pain.

"SORRY! I THOUGHT THAT WOULD WORK!" Garroth says.

"DOES IT LOOK LIKE IT----" Zane sighs. "Does it sound like it was helping me, Garroth?"

"NO..." Garroth admits. "But I---I really want to help you recover from this sunburn!" I notice Kawaii~Chan coming in behind him and I wave. She waves back.

"I understand." Zane tells Garroth, not noticing Kawaii~Chan. "But I can't even begin to describe the pain I'm in!" (boo hoo zuzu, can't be any worse than getting shot tru da heart)

Kawaii~Chan comes forward. "Garroth~Kuhn, Kawaii~Chan realizes that you are trying to help Zane~Kuhn recover, but it's not going to heal as quickly as you want it to."

"Usually it takes about 24 hours just for it to even cool down." I supply.

"R-really?" Garroth asks sadly. "I've never gotten sunburned this badly before. There has to be a way to help Zane faster."

"Trust me, Garroth, there isn't---" I start.

"There is!" Kawaii~Chan jumps in.

"Huh?"

"WHAT?"

"Eh?"

"But... it might take all day for you to get when Zane needs." Kawaii~Chan says thoughtfully. "Even then, it might not be on this island..."

"J-Just tell me and I'll go get it!" Garroth says quickly. "Anything to make Zane feel better."

"All right, but it might be a lost cause." She clears her throat. "So, there might be a plant on this island that is said to help cure sunburn!"

"Rrrrreally..." Zane says doubtfully.

"Y-yes! But it's rare to find." Kawaii~Chan assures Garroth.

"What does it look like?" He asks.

"It's orange, shaped like a bunny!"

"Oh, please, that doesn't---" I start, but Garroth's ahead of me.

"Orange flower, shaped like a bunny." He chants. "Got it."

"It might take you a whiiiiiile." Kawaii~Chan sings, and I finally understand. She's just trying to get him off of Zane's back for a little bit.

"As long as it takes, I'll do it." Garroth says. "Hold on, Zane! Your big brother will get you that flower!"

"And your little sister!" I say, hooking my arm through Garroth's. I may as well help keep him distracted. Garroth runs out the door and down the steps, dragging me with him.

"Garroth!" I complain. "We need to---"

"Orange flower, shaped like a bunny!" He interrupts, dragging me along the path, his eyes scanning for orange flowers. I roll my eyes. I love Kawaii~Chan, but when he can't find it, he'll be so disappointed!

"ORANGE FLOWER, SHAPED LIKE A BUNNY!" Garroth repeats, still looking in a patch of what looks like daisies.

"Garroth, they won't be in another patch of flowers." I sigh. "They'll be with their own kind."

"Right." He says, now looking solely for orange flowers. I follow him around from a distance, watching him in amusement as he kneels down in orange flower patches to look for the flower.

I shake my head when he gets down on hands and knees to search in a patch of grass. This is insane. I find myself staring at birds flying above us, wondering vaguely what it feels like to fly that high, when Garroth suddenly yelps and stands up, beaming.

"FOUND IT!" He says happily, displaying a bright orange flower with bunny-shaped petals. I stare at him, my jaw gaping. There is no way. Kawaii~Chan made it up, right? I thought she did! Maybe I read that whole conversation wrong.

Garroth grins at me. "C'mon! Let's go back so we can help Zane!" He tears back for the house.

"Wait, what? We---Garroth, wait for me!" I yell, chasing after him as fast as I can. "HEY! GARROTH!"

But he doesn't stop, zooming back to the house and inside, up the stairs and into the bedroom, me panting after him. "All right, we're back, I got the flower!" Garroth says hurriedly.

Kawaii~Chan and Zane turn towards him, looking extremely surprised.

"G-garroth?" Zane says.

"You actually found it!?" Kawaii~Chan says.

"Yup, and now we can use it on Zane." Garroth says proudly. "Uhhh, so what's the next step, Kawaii~Chan?"

"Oh!" she says slowly. "Uhhhhmmm, Kawaii~Chan will take it and make it into a special lotion!" She says. Zane mutters something to her and she quickly whispers back, then she takes the flower from Garroth and leaves the room. Garroth goes to Zane.

"Ohh, baby brother, are you all right?" He asks.

"Yeah. Yeah..." Zane says, sounding like his mind is on something else. I wonder what Kawaii~Chan said to him when we were gone? Whatever it was, it's got his thoughts focused on it, not on us.

My big brother, focused on a girl's conversation.
