The first time Lily Luna Potter remembers meeting the reason for her middle name was when she was four years old.
Her brothers, five and six, were annoying her greatly that day. James has just shown early signs of magic and Albus was in awe of him. He followed him around like a lost little puppy. Of course that left Lily to occupy herself with her father at work at the ministry and her mother busy cooking lunch for their guests.
She has always been a very independent child. Even at the age of four. She could walk and had little trouble making her way around the house.
She also loved answering the door when permitted. Usually Ginny would permit her to open the door when someone knocked, since you can see who's at the door from the kitchen window.
Lily, of course, did not know that and prided herself on the ability to answer the door by herself. Oblivious to the fact her mother was watching only a room away.
So when her namesake knocked on her door with her little white haired daughter on her hip Ginny greeted them through the kitchen window while her energetic toddler opened the door for them.
Since birth Lily and Starla has graced my photos side by side, so it was no surprise that Lily lit up at the sight of her best friend.
Something about the Longbottom girl made everyone in the household happy, more so Lily. James and Albus emerged from somewhere halfway through tea, stole some biscuits and disappeared again.
Lily didn't. She didn't leave the living room until the Longbottoms left. She stayed by Starla's side the whole time. The two girls plonked themselves on the door between their mothers and babbled to one another.
When they did eventually leave she was alone again. Until her father came home.
Lily Luna Potter loves her father to pieces. Always the daddy's girl. Forever the daddy's girl.
Could you be a daddy's girl to someone who isn't your father?
That's the question that burned in Lily's head when she reminisced about that day, something she had been doing quite frequently of late.
This particular time she was at dinner. Physically she was at dinner. Mentally she was home in Godric's hollow with her parents and brothers and best friend.
Starla was more than a best friend. Bella was her best friend. Starla was the love of her Goddamn life.
Bella was the one to bring her soul back to Hogwarts and the rapidly cooling food before her.
"You gonna eat something Lils?" She's asked, reaching across the table to prod at Lily's wrist with her fork. "Don't want my sister in law to waste away to nothing." Bella returned her fork to her empty plate and fixed Lily with a concerned look. The joke from seconds before gone.
Sophia, who sat beside Lily, nudged Lily's shoulder with her own. "Are you okay? You've been off since London." She enquired. The conversation brought worried looks from the others at the Slytherin table. Arron, Kirsty and Roxanna all eyed her with caution.
The relationship the friends had with Kirsty was on the mend, but she still didn't say anything, for fear of offending them. She'd been speaking with a therapist about her jealously.
Kirsty has a therapist.
Bella has a therapist.
What is it with teenagers and therapists?Lily muses over that thought before finally giving in to the stares of concern and shoveling a spoonful of cold soup into her mouth. "Happy now?" She asked after swallowing and returning the spoon to the bowl. "I'm going to lie down, I don't feel well."
She turned her attention to her father at the head table, praying he would look at her and allow her to leave. Instead he never looked her way.
Draco was the one who caught her eye. He'd been watching Bella of course, but he'd noticed Lily's stares and looked her way. She hopes he could understand her silent prayers.
He did and gave a small nod and a smile.
She left without another word to her friends.
She walked faster than she ever has before.
She walked straight into another person.
With a flash of white before she tumbled to the ground she assumes she's collided with her brother's wife or her other brother's boyfriend.
She was wrong. When she pulled herself away she saw the owner of the stark white hair.
The one and only Starla Longbottom.
Starla mutters an apology before pulling herself to her feet. She once again crouches down to pick up the books she dropped in the collision.
Without thinking Lily goes to grab one only to awkwardly fist bump Starla before pulling her hand back like it had been stuck right into something not like fire or an iron.
"I'm sorry," Starla says again before retrieving her final book and returning to her feet. Lily stands as well and the two stand awkwardly, refusing to meet the eye of the other. "I really am sorry you know."
"I know."
Lily looked up and found herself staring into Starla's dark eyes. Dark eyes, white hair. There was no question of her parentage.
"I had no right to keep something like that from you."
"You had every right." Lily replies without a second thought. She slaps a hand on the pile of books Starla is holding and they tumble to the ground. Starla starts to protest but no noise comes out.
Instead it is captured in the lips of Lily as she presses them to Starla's.
Lily pulls away first, "you were protecting me, I would have done the same thing."
Starla initiated the next kiss. And the one following that.
After those two kisses neither one knows who starts the rest.
All they know is they end up on the Slytherin common room sofa, curled up together slowly pressing kisses to one another.
The fall asleep like that before dinner ends.
So they never see the looks of pure joy on the faces of their friends when discovered.
And the never see Draco roll his eyes, cover them in a blanket and floo call Harry to tell him that Starla won't be returning to her dorm tonight.
The only time he ever allows a not Slytherin student to stay in the Slytherin dorms.
When asked years later why then he simply replies with a smile. "The deserve each other."
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
