I could feel the hatred of me roll off in waves from the people I walked past in my tiny village. Their stares felt like they were burning a hole in the back of my head. I could hear them whisper not too quietly to each other.
"It's her!"
"She's going to be the death of us all!"
"She should just die!"
"Yeah it would be safer for us!"
"Screw that devil's spawn!"
I turned around and saw that they were slowly walking up to me with rakes and pikes, but once they saw that I was looking at them they ran away like the chickens they were.
I sighed. I turned back around and started to walk to the little hut that me and my sister, who has no devil mark, live. As I was walking away, something hit my back.
"Ow!" I exclaimed as I rubbed my back and looked down. I then saw a rock which I guess was the thing I felt hit my back. I glanced behind me and saw that the other villagers were getting more ammo to throw at me so I ran away with my arms protecting my head.
I ran quickly and for the most part, I avoided the rocks and debris they threw at me.
When I finally got home, I saw my sister, Akuheki, getting ready for our "show". She wore a bright red and orange dress with many fancy frills and at the moment, she was tying up her long blonde hair into two pigtails. I fingered my red-brown hair and felt a pang of jealousy: why was I the only one marked by the devil?
Akuheki turned around and sneered at me, "Get ready Kasai!"
"I'm already ready. I don't need to change clothes cuz 1) I won't be seen and 2) I hide behind the curtain to do your 'magic' for you," I replied. I guess I should explain what the heck we are talking about.
So in this village, the only 'job' I could get was with my sister since she tolerates my presence. Somehow, I have powers over fire and Akuheki had the idea of hosting a magic show. The only thing was that I would be providing the magic behind the curtain while Akuheki would provide the "actress".
So basically my sister pretended to be a witch or something and I just had to hide my marked face behind the curtain.
Anyway, Akuheki finally finished her hair and said nonchalantly, "Did you hear that a travelling carnival is here?"
"Nope," I replied. Who would tell me that? No one wanted to talk to the cursed girl.
"You seriously didn't see the huge red and white tent they set up?" Akuheki asked me with shock on her face.
I was about to say something about trying to run back here without getting my brain smacked out of my head with rocks when Akuheki continued, "Well, it doesn't surprise me anyway since half of your face is covered by your red hair!"
Why do I cover half my face? Simple.
My devil marks are on the left side of my face around my left eye. I know that people hate seeing my marks, so I hide them with my long red bangs.
Akuheki sneaked a glance outside and turned back around saying, "Hey our audience is here! Get to your position!"
I quickly left our hut using the back door and hid behind the curtain that was the backdrop of my sister's 'performance'.
I could hear Akuheki say in a loud jolly voice, "Welcome to Akuheki's Magic Show! Who's ready to watch some magic happen?!"
The crowd of children cheered in response.
Even though I couldn't see her, I could clearly imagine what she was doing. First, she would do a few card tricks which were all about slight of hand. She would then make objects "appear" out of thin air which was more slight of hand. Throughout all of this I could hear the children go "Ooooh" "Aaaah" at each trick Akuheki did.
I then heard Akuheki say loudly, "And now, I will bend fire to my will!" I could faintly see her shadow on the curtain and that was my cue to make fire appear to be coming from her hand.
With a snap of my fingers, I made a small flame of fire appear above Akuheki's hand. Akuheki then did her dance routine with the fire and I bended it to do incredible things like grow bigger and turn into different shapes.
If the crowd was loud before, they were deafening now.
Finally, Akuheki bowed to her audience and used a hat to collect money from her 'performance'. With my part done, I slipped back inside our hut and I waited for Akuheki to come back in after talking to her fans.
Akuheki came back inside after a good ten minutes and said, "That performance was the best yet! I got ten silvers!"
"You mean we?" I corrected.
"Oh yeah, we," she said off handedly. I rolled my eyes as she continued to gush about her performance. "Oh and it seemed like some of the carnival people were there watching too! They gave me five silvers!"
"Oh and what did they look like?" I asked curious.
She flipped her hair over her shoulder and said, "They looked like regular people but they had some kind of air about them". Akuheki then handed me the money and said, "Go and get us some dinner!"
She handed me the ten silver and pushed me out of our hut.
You're probably wondering why I'm buying the food.
Well since I have devil marks, shop keepers sell me things cheaper. Not because they feel sorry for me or anything, they just want me away from them as quickly as possible.
As I was walking toward the shopping area, I felt a hand on each of my shoulders and I quickly turned around fearing that it was more villagers coming to attack me. Instead I saw two people who weren't from my village.
They then smiled at me and the guy said, "Hey there!"
