Aphrodite POV
I was walking through the streets of Olympus when I stopped at a stall that was operated by a flower nymph.
The stall had all kinds of makeup products on it, godly makeup and regular mortal makeup. The stock was plentiful and by anyone else, it would be considered tons, but being the goddess of beauty, I had all the stuff that was on display, if not more.
Sure I can click my fingers and have a full face of flawless makeup on, but I've always preferred to do it myself. I see makeup as like an art. If I just had it appear on my face, it would be like using a stamp for a painting, instead of painting it by hand. Pointless.
Despite already having the products, I bought a couple drachmas worth of stuff. It's always hard for nymphs to make money up here, considering the population is majority gods who can have whatever they want at the snap of a finger.
Besides it's not like I don't have the money, being an Olympian, might as well do something good with it like supporting local businesses.
I handed the golden coins over to the grateful nymph.
"Your change," she said quietly attempting to hand me the spare money.
"It's fine, keep it," I said hurriedly.
I had just noticed someone out of the corner of my eye buying a double-ended spear from a cyclops at the other side of the road.
Ares.
I wasn't sure if he had seen me yet. I really hoped he hadn't, considering I had been avoiding him for days after his last outburst. In fact, I haven't seen him since before Percy found out that he had a daughter.
I turned to the nymph and flashed her a smile. "Hey uh, I might actually buy something else too," I said.
She gave me a bright smile back, "Great! Anything in particular?"
I swallowed when I saw that Ares had just been handed back his change. He would be done soon.
"Yeah," I said starting to panic. "I think I saw it behind here."
I quickly ducked in behind the stall and quietly crouched there, praying to every and any god that Ares didn't see me.
See that part about praying to every god? Yeah, that was a big mistake.
"APHRODITE!" Ares roared from the street.
The Nymph looked down at me with wide eyes. I noticed her name tag said, Poppy.
I held my finger to my lips and mouthed, "Please don't say anything."
She gave me a weak smile but then lifted her head and continued to arrange her stock as if I was never there.
I made a mental note to pay Poppy back later.
"Aphrodite!" Ares called angrily. "I heard your prayer! Where are you, wh**e?"
I winced at the name he called me. Sure he called me it often, but it didn't mean it stung any less.
All was silent for a few minutes and I thought maybe I would getaway, but then I heard a deep laugh.
"I can smell your perfume, Dite," he chuckled menacingly.
If this were any less terrifying I would have laughed at Ares acting like a sniffer dog.
I heard his thumping footsteps become louder and louder and I knew he was getting closer.
Poppy nudged me discreetly with her knee, but I didn't know what she wanted until it was too late.
