Niall's pov

I laid in bed beside Jessica after everyone had left. Luckily, this wasn't a very strict hospital so the nurses let us stay. Neither of us were very tired so we just watched tv until I finally got up the courage to ask her about Toby. "Jessica?"

"Hmm?" I took a deep breath.

"Who's Toby?" I asked. I felt her body tense and she switched off the television then turned around to look at me.

"How do you know about Toby?" She whispered, her voice cracking a little.

"You said his name earlier when you had your nightmare." I explained, "Who is he?" I asked gently, unaware of how delicate the conversion was.

"Toby would have been my brother." She paused and breathed slowly, "When, um, when my dad was in his car accident...me and mom were in the car too. She was maybe five months pregnant and we had just picked out a name for him when the accident happened." She stopped and sniffed a little, "Her injuries were so severe that it killed Toby." I was speechless. All I wanted to do was hold her in my arms and let her cry and cry with her. "I don't remember a lot from my life then, but I will never forget that I promised Toby I would be the best sister ever. And I failed him." She cried.

"No, no, you didn't." I said softly and wrapped my arms around her  and hugged her to my chest. "You were five years old, there was nothing that you could have done." I explained, but she only cried more.

"That's what hurts the most."

"I'm sorry." I said, not knowing anything else to say. It killed me that I couldn't mend her heart, but as if she read my mind, she told me what to do.

"Just hold me and never let me go."

The next day Jessica got to come home, but Carlie still had a few weeks to go before she would be released. Jessica talked to Carlie for an hour on the phone after we got home. They saw each other before we left the hospital, I swear I will never understand girls. Jessica insisted that we come visit them but Carlie just kept telling her to stay home and rest. So, after the millionth time of being told to stay home Jessica finally listened. And it was a good thing too because not long after Jessica hung up the phone there an unexpected knock at the door then the doorbell then rapid knocking. I rushed to the door and swung it open to see my mother and...Jessica's mother? "Niall, where is Jessica?" Anna questioned me.

"Mom?" I heard Jessica's voice behind me. Before I could make sense of what was happening, Anna pushed past me.

"My baby!" She grabbed Jessica's face, examining her, "Niall said there was a car accident! Are you ok? Did you get hurt?" Anna asked frantically.

"Mom, I'm fine!" Jessica laughed, removing Anna's hands. Anna looked at her again but closer.

"Have you gotten chubbier since I saw you last?" She asked. I wanted to die right then because I remembered what we had to eventually tell her.

"Um, Mum?" I was quick to change the subject, "Not to be rude but what are you doing here?"

"Well, since someone forgot to pick her up at the airport and someone wouldn't answer their phone," she glared at me, "she called me."

"I'm sorry, my phone died." I apologized to both of them.

"You know," Jessica started, "it's good both of you are here. Come in, Niall and I have something we need to tell you." She said calmly, glancing at me. I followed the three of them into the living room. My mum and Anna sat on one couch while Jessica and I sat on the other.

"You two are acting strange. Is everything alright?" Anna asked us.

"We, um, we have something we need to tell both of you." Jessica said, "But, neither of you can overreact ok, please let us explain before both of you go crazy."

"Then tell us, dear." Mum urged.

I reached for Niall's hand to slip mine inside it. "I-I'm pregnant." I didn't know how else to tell them other than being direct. I was so nervous, I thought my stomach might explode from the burning anxiety. I had thought of how they would react — throwing things, breaking everything in reach, stabbing me and Niall with the debris of the glass they broke. But, they both became strangely quiet, too quiet to be a good thing. Niall squeezed my hand, showing me he was just as nervous and confused as I was.

Just when I thought our mothers must not have cared they both shouted, "WHAT?" It made both Niall and I jump and mouths fall agape, searching for the right words.

"No, you're not, you're not that stupid!" Jessica's mum said to her. Jessica just kept her mouth shut and held a pained expression on her face, I knew how much she hated upsetting people.

"Niall, I thought we had this talk." My mum said, "Was I not clear?"

"Yes, mum! Very clear." I stopped before she could go any further. Since my dad wasn't around a lot during my teen years, let's just say learning about the birds and the bees was embarrassing and emotionally painful for me.

"What we did wasn't a mistake." Jessica spoke up, shocking our parents, "We didn't plan for this, it just happened."

"Jessica, you are seventeen years old, Niall is twenty. He is an adult, you are a child!" I knew that remark by Anna would make Jessica's blood boil.

"I am not a child!" She shouted.

"Only children say that!" Anna shouted back.

"Oh, so you left a child here for three months and barely called in to check on me. You left the country!"

"You know why I left!"

"Please calm down, both of you!" My mum shouted, which surprised me. I haven't heard her yell since I dropped out of high school. My mum may be little, but she can be quite fierce. "Now, listen, what they did was wrong and we all know they shouldn't have done it." She glares at the two of us then turns back to Anna, "But, we, as the parents, have to handle this right. If we get angry they'll only push further away from us." She finished.

"She's right." I remarked.

"Don't push your luck, Niall." Anna growled.

"Yes, ma'am." I responded quickly Amd shut my mouth. Anna had a few tears falling down her cheeks and just stared at us.

"I-I love you both, I want you to know that." We both nodded. "Do you plan on getting married soon?"

"Um," To be honest, I hadn't thought about it. But, Jessica's mum was very old fashioned so, I guess I should have been expecting it, "we haven't spoken about it."

"Well, I suggest you two should start planning." I didn't want to get engaged this way. Yes, I wanted to marry Jessica some day, but she deserves better timing than this. "I'm gonna run to the market, get some groceries." Anna said, then walked back out the door, keys and purse in hand. I was pretty shocked that she just left.

"Well, I'm going back home." My mum said, getting up to hug Jessica. When she got to she she stared then hit me in the side of the head.

"Ow! Big ring!"

"I love you." She said then hugged me tight Amd kissed my cheek. I knew why she hit me, I guess I kinda did deserve it. Then she left, leaving Jessica and me alone.

"Is your mum gonna be ok?" I asked, concerned.

"Yeah, she's just thinking." She mumbled, looking sad. So, I pulled her into my arms and held her tightly. I knew she was sad by Anna's reaction. So, I just held her, knowing it was what she needed. "Niall?" I heard her voice crack and I knew she was crying, "What are we gonna do?"

"I don't know." I answered honestly, "I don't know."
