Mary scuffed her feet on the wool carpet and sighed, 'the bell is going ring any minute now...'
The metallic DONG caused the school to erupt. Children swarmed the hallways like excited bees. Locker doors slammed shut, not to be opened again for three weeks, when school resumed after the new year.
Mary Jane Lupus snatched up her bag and scurried out the door with the rest of the masses. She ran with such inhuman speed that she didn't even notice the figure silently observing her every move as she exited the building. She didn't stop running till she reached her home.
She threw her bag down with a thud on the familiar wooden porch and gazed up at the friendly old house. She smiled at his crooked teeth. "Mom, I'm home", Mary yelled. She waited for the recognizable sound of keys jingling in the rusted lock but only silence greeted her. 'Strange...Mom always answers me.' After a few seconds of waiting Mary noticed that the lock was smashed so the house was unlocked. 'Weird', "Mom! You there?". Silence... That wasn't a good sign. Mary slowly and quietly eased the door open and gasped!!! The surprise that waited for her shook her to the core.
