She looked up at the forlorn house, moonlight eerily lit up the sad house. It was no longer a home. Mary clicked on the torch and it illuminated the door. It was no longer closed as she had left it so many weeks ago. It was shoved aside in a hurry and a hinge had been broken. 'This is not a good sign.'
She entered the house cautiously and looked around. Someone had definitely been here since the last time. The furniture was dusty but shoe prints were plain to see on the floor where the dust had been disturbed. She racked her memory for the hidden drawer. 'Where was it again? Oh yes in the kitchen,' she recalled her mother's love for food. Her mother was one of the best cooks so it would naturally be in the kitchen. She shoved aside broken bookshelves and moved dusty books off the floor. She reached the kitchen and found the stove, or what was left of it. It had been shattered by something heavy. 'It had to be safe, it just had to be.'
The bit of metal from the stove groaned as she heaved it aside to reach the strategically placed crack on the bottom of the wall. She gently fumbled around by it. After half an hour of pushing and grunting around the crack. Mary gave an exhausted and frustrated sigh. Time was running out and she couldn't figure it out. Her mother had explained that it had a weak spot but where? She gave one last heave on one side of the crack at the very top. It immediately gave way, the wall crumbled and reveled an old cupboard.
She worked quickly, her fingers danced between the cupboard doors and shelves. They were empty. As she was about to give up and sulk, a small drawer at the bottom of the cupboard caught her eye. She touched it and a sensor scanned her eyes with a ruby light that turned green once it scanned her eyes. She launched herself backwards in surprise and smashed her arm on a broken piece of stove metal. It gashed her skin open. Pain shot through her arm but that was nothing compared to what happened next.
The drawer unlocked and opened automatically. Inside rested a small wrapped parcel and a note. She clutched it to her chest and pocketed it. She knew that she had to get home now or the sun would show her face and catch her out.
Mary turned and fled for the door. She sprinted home as fast as she could, the sky was already changing color quickly.
She reached her bedroom just as the sun started peering through the trees.
She flopped down on her bed in complete and utter exhaustion. The pain in her arm reminded her to get it cleaned up and hidden. She quickly ran to her bathroom and wiped at her wound on her arm. It stung painfully as she treated it. She grabbed a bandage from her small medical kit that Meg had given her if she ever ran into trouble. She hoped this would do for now.
She gently eased the package from her pocket and the note. The package was rough to the touch and the note was written on a weird textured paper. The note felt rough yet smooth, old yet new. She gently unfolded the note with care and gazed at it...
