Slowly her eyes adjusted to the darkness that had swallowed the land. It was pitch black and the moon hid her assuring and understanding face from Mary's view.
Mary sat up slowly and tried to look around but she could see nothing so she waited till sunrise. She dozed off once more as she listened to the swirling night sounds.
Sun-rays hit Mary's paleface and still body. Bleary-eyed she gazed around, 'Where am I?'. Then the memories of last night surged through her drowsy mind. 'Oh yes, now I remember', her legs trembled as she slowly rose to her feet.
"Hello? Anyone here?", she yelled. A soft breeze ruffled her long brunette hair and silence once again filled the air. 'Admit it, you're lost. It was foolish of you to run in a panic.' Mary shook her head and shoved the thought away. She had to find a way out of the forest.
"Okay let's try remember which way we came", she whispered to herself. Howling echoed through the sun-rays and chilled her 'Great now there are wolves, I'm dead! What must I do now?', Mary thought to herself then she saw a small hollow in a nearby tree and an idea came to her. She quietly grabbed a nearby stick and ran into the hollow snapping small twigs underfoot. 'You are so silly they would have heard that!', the wolves heard her alright and sprinted towards her. In the blink of an eye the wolves surrounded the tree trunk snarling and growling.
They stared at her and lunged forward towards her shaking body. She held the stick out and taunted them with it.
Then out of nowhere four other wolves barged into the rest and a daring dispute followed suit. Blood flowed and growls pierced the morning air. Animals scurried away in a panic.
Silence...
Mary shakily peeked out of the hollow and saw the pack of wolves running away from the four bold wolves. The tallest and oldest wolf caught her eye and she saw a terrible bloody claw mark on his right eyelid.
He erupted with a deep howl and stalked away into the tangled forest with the rest of the wolves striding along behind.
She was alone once more, Mary crawled out the hollow and watched in disbelief as the small pack of four disappeared out of sight. 'Why did they protect me?' Mary wondered.
It was then as she stood there alone that she knew she was well and truly lost. She had been saved but she didn't know where or what to do. She knew she had to get out of the forest before her luck ran out.
