Chapter 19- The Gorgeous Yearbook Owner

After school, the group met up at the gym, where Sheldon's last lesson was at. As expected, he was on the sidelines typing on a laptop as the rest of his classmates, sweaty but looking happy, collected the balls and started filing out.

The atmosphere was tense and awkward. Sheldon refused to look at Penny or Amy, and even Howard's usual dirty jokes failed to lighten the mood. Leonard decided to take the reins for once and asked Penny if they could head to her place and do all the brainstorming and sleuthing there.

'Actually, ' Howard piped up. 'I called the number. It was a lady who picked up. Said her name was Elizabeth White. I told her we were doing some school research on our alumni and she gave me her address. '

'Ok, then we should go to her place straightaway right? ' Penny asked.

'I guess. But guys- '

'Well let's hurry or else I'll run out of time to do homework! ' Sheldon shot Penny a murderous glare.

'Um, guys. She lives at Murberry Lane.'

'Where? ' Leonard squinted.

'Exactly. It's an hour's drive there. So I'm guessing nobody can get any school work done.' Howard looked pointedly at Sheldon.

'Fine. I'll do it in the car. If there are road bumps and my handwriting messes up, I'm blaming you.' He crossed his arms and stared at Penny.

'Alright, alright. Let's go.' Penny sighed.

Elizabeth White stayed at a quaint looking house. It was small,yet  colorful flowers decorated the front lawn in neat rows. Sheldon got out of the car first, but Leonard quickly stopped him before he could do his knocking thing.

'Hello.' A pleasant looking plump lady with a gentle smile greeted them.

'Hi. We're from the-'

'I know. Come in! And help yourselves to anything.'

The group crowded around a coffee table which had a plate of scones and a teapot. Amy couldn't help herself and took one. Gag. Raisins.

'So, Mrs White, you mentioned that you knew about this yearbook?'

'Of course I do. Daphne's always poring over school yearbooks. She's on the students' council, you know.' She had a proud gleam in her eyes.

'So it's your daughter, not you?' Howard enquired.

'Yes. Well, she's in her room now. DAPHNE? ' she bellowed. 'YOU HAVE GUESTS!'

Poor Leonard almost burst his eardrums, but quickly recovered when a tall, slender brunette ran down the stairs. She was really gorgeous.

'Hi guys. What are you here for? ' she asked in an unenthusiastic monotone.

'Well, it has come to our attention that you are the owner of this yearbook? '

'Uh,yeah. How did you get it?' Daphne narrowed her eyes.

'Our friend found it. Did you do this, by any chance? ' Leonard asked, pointing to the scratched out face of Mr P and the threatening phrase.

Daphne's face definitely grew a shade paler. 'We were just messing around. '

Howard raised an eyebrow in disbelief.

'Mom, don't you need to bake some bread? ' Daphne said abruptly in an attempt to drive her mom away.

'Oh, I almost forgot. You kids have fun,'she smiled and walked off.

'What's your deal. ' Daphne suddenly  didn't look so attractive anymore.

'What I'm trying to say is, did you try to murder Mr P?'

'What, just because we messed with his picture means I'm a murderer?' Daphne retorted. 'Get out of here.' She lowered her voice in a threatening hiss.

But Leonard saw something slip in her expression. 'I know it's not you.'

Daphne raised an eyebrow questioningly.

'But you know who it is.'

Daphne gave a fake laugh. 'Sure I do, smart alec. You know what, I'm really busy now.' She walked over to the door. 'If you don't mind.'

Penny threw Leonard a desperate look, but he was calm.

'Thanks for your time Daphne. ' Leonard said simply before the door slammed shut in their faces.

'A wasted trip, just what I anticipated, ' Sheldon groaned.

'You're actually wrong, Sheldon Cooper. ' Leonard smiled secretively. 'We're one step closer to the perpetrator.'

'Excuse me? '

'Daphne clearly knows who committed the crime but she's afraid to tell. But it has got to be someone close to her in school.

'Let's conduct a little interview with the student council tomorrow. ' Leonard had a pleased smile on his face, like the cat who caught the canary.
