Before: Riley

Despite my mental protests, I had fallen asleep on the chair in Dylan's room after the surgery.

The adrenaline from the past few hours had finally left my body and it couldn't take being awake anymore. Before the school's attack, I had pulled two all nighters for the pervious mission with the team. My body was screaming at me by the time I crashed on the chair.

I didn't sleep for long though. Agent Carter JR had already crashed twice during surgery, but there were fragments of the third bullet in his spine. I wasn't allowed in the Operating Room but another Secret Service agent went until his father arrived. I was checked out by a nurse while I waited. After everything that's happened, it took me hours to realize I had a knife wound in my shoulder. They stitched up and I was free to leave but I found myself

Something about wanting to see Agent Carter's surgery through kept me there, in the waiting room in a place I shouldn't be. I finally got Agent Carter Sr. to take a five minute break and get something to eat. I told him I would watch his son.

I woke up to the sound of alarms. Dylan was having a seizure.

They rushed me out of the room, but not before I caught a glimpse of the broken boy shaking violently in his bed. His father came rushing in, asking me what happened.

"He had a seizure in his sleep," I explained as we both watched the doctors try to get his body in control. After what left like forever, Dylan stopped moving.

The doctors said it wasn't uncommon for this to happen after spinal surgery. It shouldn't occur again.

Agent Carter Sr. looked at me with a tired expression. "I appreciate everything you did, Agent Fay. But you're injured too. Go home. Rest." I only nodded. I had no right to tell him I wanted to make sure Dylan woke up. That if it wasn't for the fact that my body was screaming for a bed, I would stay.

Agent Edwards came to pick me up. My previous partner turned Director scanned me over.

"You look like shit, Fay."

"I feel like shit. Any updates?" He gave me a side glance as he started driving away from the parking lot.

"How about you sleep a few hours before you start grilling me?"

"How about you just tell me before I take an Uber to the White House myself?" He shook his head and slightly chuckled.

"They've agreed to a joint investigator thanks to your involvement and Melody being a potential target. But I made it it clear that Melody stays out of this case." I raised my eyebrow. "She's already too close to this, Riley. When she gets back, I have cases to keep her occupied."

"She won't agree to that."

"Which is why you'll make sure she will," Director Edwards sent me fake smile. My shoulder was hurting too much for me to argue. I leaned the passenger chair back.

"Fine. Did you get the pick up team ready?"

"Change of plans. Jasper is being sent to Reyna's as we speak. Better security wise."

So Melody isn't coming back yet. At least not until her vacation was over.

"And it keeps Melody distracted and out of the case," I added what he doesn't say and he doesn't deny it. "You're big on protector her now, where was this months ago?"
