When I woke up the next morning, I called Aaron on one of Riley's SAT phones. I let it ring three times, and waited a whole minute before calling back. It was a system we came up during our time in school.
He picked up in the first ring.
"Don't talk, just listen," he said, and I immediately knew the Secret Service had sent agents to talk to him already. If he picked up it's because they've tapped his phone. I mentally started counting the seconds.
"You're in deep shit, Little Warrior," he said, and at the sound of his nickname for me, I almost cried. "I don't know what you're planning, or where you are... but I know you. And I know you would never kill the First Lady. So just hurry up and catch the bastards who decided to mess with you, Little Warrior. I miss you."
Time was up and I forced myself to hung up the phone first. It needed to come from my end, for Aaron's stake. I felt tears threaten to flow out of me, but I had to save the crying for later. I had to call October.
I had the same system with her as Aaron. After three rings and a minute of waiting, I called again.
"You missed Bodyguard and Bodyguard Junior by seconds," October greeted me. I froze.
"The Carters were there already?" I asked. They moved quickly, but Headmistress Abate wouldn't want to delay the agents in fear of looking like she was protecting me. I just didn't think it would happened in less than 24 hours.
"They put all your friends and me in the conference room in the C wing, the one with the tinted window. Asked us questions about when was the last time we saw you and if we were knew anything about your plan. They wouldn't tell us what they're accusing you of, Mel. And if this is about the hard drive, you're going to have to tell me."
I knew that October wouldn't help without details. And Riley was sure there was no hard drive in the things he sent for my apartment. This meant October was the only one who had the sensitive information about the case. Whatever I found that led to me go off the grid would be updated before I left.
"I think it's better if-"
"Nope. I made my terms clear, Mel. I'll help in whatever way I can, but I'm not doing it blindfolded." October has been kept in the dark about the real reason behind her permeant stay at Reyna's and that was just about the only thing she'll let herself stay out of. Nothing else.
"The First Lady is dead, October. They think I did and they think I kidnapped Jasper because he helped me escape the White House."
There was a silence in the other end that kept me on the edge. For a moment, I thought she was going to hang up.
"Alright, tell me how to open the stupid thing."
When I started investigator my stalkers, I gave October a hard drive that was synced up to mine. Every time I uploaded something, it was directly, and encryptedly, sent to October's. But she couldn't open it. If I didn't check in on the hard drive every four weeks, it would send her an automatic email explaining how to unlock it.
But if I've been missing for a month, it should've sent her an email already.
"You mean you didn't receive the instructions after a month?"
