After: 1

Jasper

I stared at Melody, her body cluttered up in the corner of my father's office. The entire office was tense. A few feet away, Marissa was bleeding on the desk. Her arms were spread across the wood and a puddle of blood started forming around her.

But I forced myself not to look at the body. Instead, I stared at my girlfriend- my ex girlfriend, and the terrified look on her face. I tried to step forward again, but Dylan stopped me.

"Mel," He started, his voice was soft and calming. He inched closer. She barely acknowledged him. She didn't move. It seemed as if Melody forgot anyone else was in the room.

After Dylan had announced her arrest, she froze. She only stared at her hands. Her bloody hands.

Something was wrong with her, I could see it. I knew Dylan saw it too. She wouldn't do this, not without a reason. That's not the way she was trained. That's not who she is.

And until we know everything that happened here, I'm going to keep holding on to that.

Without looking up, she finally spoke. "I don't... I don't...." She started muttering those words again and again. But Mel never finished the sentence. "I don't... I don't..." She shook her head from side to side, again and again.

"You don't what?" Dylan asked, and Melody finally looked up. She looked so broken, so sad. My chest tighten. All I wanted to do was go over there and wrap my arms around her. Let her know that I'm here. Let her know that she's safe.

But, I knew she wasn't. This wasn't something Melody could talk her way out of.

This was bad.

"I don't remember, Dylan," She finally responded, her voice cracking. "My mind... I don't remember anything."

Dylan continued to step closer to her. "Melody?" He said her name like a question. And then noticed he was taking out his handcuffs.

"Dylan-" I whispered, but he ignored me completely. His eyes stayed on Melody, his guard completely up.

"I'm going to cuff you, okay?"

Melody shook her head. "I didn't do this, I didn't kill-" her voice cracked and tears started flowing down her face. Then her eyes met mine and they changed. They weren't broken anymore.

"I didn't kill Marissa, Jasper," she said. She wanted me to believe her. Her voice was filled with determination. "I would never kill her," she added and I knew that. No matter how bad it looked, I believed her. And I opened my mouth to tell her, but Dylan interrupted me.

"Get him out of here," He ordered and someone grabbed my arm. I pulled back.

"What? No!" I pushed the guard off of me, but two more grabbed each of my arms. "Dylan!" I yelled after him as they started to drag me away. He ignored me. Again. I watched as Melody closed her eyes and held her hands to Dylan.

I couldn't help her.

All I could do was watch.

Watch as Dylan clipped the metal rings around her bloody wrist.

Watch as Dylan started reading her her rights.

Watch as my father was being held back by three guards.

All I could do was watch.
