Chapter One

Tristan's P.O.V

"Mother, can I ask you something?" She nods saying that I can always talk to her about anything. 

I sit up in my bed and ask, "Why do I have to hide my magic? Is it bad?" 

She smiles sadly and sits next to me. 

"Of course it's not bad. Some people just don't understand that so they're afraid of it," she explains softly. 

I nod even though I don't really understand. My father comes in looking tired from working all day. He asks what we're talking about so my mother tells him what I asked. With a nod he walks over to the other side of my bed and sits down. 

"Madelyn, do you know what tomorrow is? I can't seem to remember," he says. 

"It's my birthday!" I say excitedly. 

"Oh that's right. How could I forget? You're going to be seven right?" he questions and I shake my head. "Oh. Six?" he asks. 

"No, I'm gonna be eight!" I tell him. He laughs and tickles me saying that he knew that. 

"You best go to sleep then. When you wake up tomorrow your mother and I have a gift for you," he tells me. 

I ask what it is but he tells me I'll see tomorrow and that it's time to sleep. They tuck me in and kiss my forehead before saying goodnight and they love me. Mother blows out the candle so I get comfy and fall asleep.

The next morning I wake up and hurriedly get dressed. I run out of my room and into the kitchen area where my parents are. 

"Here's the birthday boy!" my father says picking me up. 

He and my mother kiss my cheek before he sets me down in one of the chairs. Mother walks over with a plate and sets it down right in front of me. 

"For me?!" I ask looking at my parents. They both nod so I start eating the special food they cooked just for me. When I finish I climb off the chair and tell my parents that I'm going to see Leo and Alex. 

"Don't you want your present?" my father asks. 

I turn around and make my way over to them. I sit on my mother's lap while my father pulls something out from behind him. When I remove the cloth I realize it's a book and when I open it I realize it's a book of magic. 

"Really?! Does this mean I can learn spells and stuff?" I ask and they nod. Yes! 

Mother reminds me to only use it in our home and not to take it outside. I assure them I won't before thanking them. 

After hiding the book in my room I say goodbye to them and make my way to the castle. When I approach the main square I see Leon and Preston. They wave and wish me a happy birthday. After thanking them I make my way straight to Leo's chambers and on my way there I run into Queen Elena and Alex. 

"Hello Tristan, happy birthday!" she tells me with a smile. Alex wishes me a happy birthday as well so I make sure to thank them both.

When I reach Leo's chambers I notice that his door is halfway open. Walking in I notice Leo sitting on the floor in front of his bed crying. 

"Are you okay?" I ask. 

He stands up and wipes his face while telling me he's alright. I ask him if he's sure and he nods before changing the subject. 

"I have something for you. For your birthday," he says with a smile. Maybe he just had a bad dream or something. He pulls out something from under his bed and then walks over to me.
