Somewhere in Vale, in an ultra-tech lab, a scientist named Dr. Marion Richards was in the process of conducting an experiment.
Dr. Richards: "Journal entry 567 Valean government commission project codenamed, Nanotech". "Experiment proceeding as planned". "The nanobots continue to work together as a colony". "Coordinated by by the hive mind contained within the robotic cells".
Dr. Richards looks through a microscope to see the nanobots inside the containment vessel.
Dr. Richards: "The safety restriction is still in place". "It cannot disassemble molecules or organic cells as it will in the future when it performs microscopic operations".
Dr. Richards pushes a button to transport a toaster and an alarm clock into the containment vessel.
Dr. Richards: "7:05 a.m., first test of its ability to disassemble and reassemble mechanical devices".
Once the two devices were inside the vessel, the nanobot swarm hovered over them as the swarm briefly glanced at Dr. Richards before proceeding to surround the devices. Tearing them apart and reassembling them.
The good doctor initially seemed pleased that the nanobots seem to be doing their job. But she soon felt disappointment and frustration the moment the nanobots were done.
Instead of reassembling the devices back into what they were, the nanobots had instead reassembled them into a body.
Dr. Richards: "Ugh, oh please, I thought this was fixed". *shakes head* "The mental structure of the hive mind is equivalent to that of a three-year-old child to facilitate new information".
The nanobots, now with a robotic body, reached out and touched the glass as it stared up at Marion almost like a child looking up to its mother.
Dr. Richards: "It's personifying again, *sighs* ridiculous".
Holding up a remote, Dr. Richards presses a button which causes the little robot to let out a horrific childlike scream as it was electrocuted and destroyed. The nanobots left their destroyed body and floated in the container aimlessly.
Dr. Richards: "This personality glitch will have to be eradicated as soon as possible". *rubs head* "Ugh, wish I could do the same to this headache". *groans* "I need a cup of coffee".
However, as the doctor walked away, the swarm of nanobots peeked out to watch until she was truly gone before diving back to the destroyed electronics.
The nanobots once again swarmed over the devices and reconstructed its body. But this time it had turned its left hand into a drill. Which the little robot used to drill its way out of the container. Which was when the nanobots ditched their body and the swarm traveled into a nearby vent and made its way outside the building.
Once outside, the nanobots traveled out of the alleyway and onto the street. Where they hid themselves out of sight from the people walking by before coming across someone selling toy robots from an open suitcase. A man named Harry "the Pickpocket" Parker.
Harry: "Hey, the new sci bots are here"! "Get 'em while their hot"!
The nanobots collectively peeked over the edge of the sidewalk. Only enough so that they wouldn't be seen while also allowing them to observe the man. Who was noticeably becoming more frustrated as more people passed by him without buying what he was selling.
Harry: "You think you're too good for me"? "Is that it"? "Why I ought to-"
Suddenly, the sound of a child crying out:
Child: "Daddy, daddy, I want one"!
The nanobots continue to observe the transaction whilst staying hidden.
