"Uhm..." I admit, I was scared of hearing answers I didn't want to know. After having an internal battle with myself, I decided to just keep everything to myself for now. I unconsciously fiddled with my sleeves again. I didn't have the strength to look at Kai. I turned my gaze to the people who were conversing, laughing, having the time of their lives. Just anything that would distract me.I heard him sigh. Kai rolled off his shoulders first before leaning in towards me. He kept his gaze steady and stared deeply into my eyes. He somehow caught my gaze after a few attempts of following every direction my vision went. I felt slightly intimidated by him. Never have I seen this side of him. It was like he was a totally different person.
"She kept sticking around Yeonjun hyung ever since we debuted." He halted for a second, analysing my features. My eyes widened, I'm surprised he was willing to tell me. Kai didn't need to say much because I already know who he was pertaining to. He continued shortly.
"Hyung didn't like her, really. We all did. She was kind of annoying. I didn't know what happened but after we arrived from Japan, they started to hang out." He was playing with his straw while telling me this. Kai unconsciously spaced out into a trance. He was staring intensely at his drink.
He broke out of his daze a few moments after shaking his head harshly. He surveyed my facial expressions instead.I cleared my throat. It felt like I swallowed a very hard pill and now I'm choking. I tried so hard to look unaffected but basing on Kai's sympathetic looks, I wasn't doing a good job. "You can mention her name, Kai. It's not like she'll magically pop out of nowhere." I joked, desperately trying to ease the awkward atmosphere. I pinched my elbow, trying too hard in distracting myself from the uncomfortable bubble we were in.
"She always did! Noona, oh my god. She was like a ghost! She popped up everywhere we go. Yeji noona is actually not that bad but there is something off about her that really bothers me." I forced out a laugh. Kai was probably exaggerating things again. I heard different stories about Yeji and all of them were positive. She was pretty and kind. She was perfect for him.
"You know what. The sun's about to set. Let's watch the fireworks display. It will start any time soon." I quickly changed the topic. Another mention of her with him will surely trigger my water works. I couldn't afford bawling my eyes out in public. I quickly stood up and pulled Kai up to his feet. I didn't want to soil the rest of the wonderful date we have.
I lead him to the benches and sat beside an old lady. We waited for fifteen minutes more. Somehow being out in the open did the trick. Our shoulders sagged in relief and we basked in silence. Thoughts were running everywhere in brain immediately.
I gasped when the faint sounds of explosion came from a distance. It was starting. Wow. The fireworks littered the sky with different hues of color. It was so pretty. I turned to the younger one beside me and he too was mesmerised by the patterns written on the dark sky.
"Something happened with the project you were in. You act so indifferent." Kai broke the silence once the show ended. He was so sure of what he was speaking, his voice held finality in it.
Was there anything I could hide from him?
"Let's just say I was smacked too hard on the face with reality. It was a wake up call." I answered him vaguely. I felt him staring at me, it burned the sides of my cheek.
"You're giving up on him?" He was disappointed. I could tell by the way his voice fell. I shrugged.
"I long gave up on him the moment I signed those contracts, Kai." I made my voice sound stronger. Even if I was starting to feel a lump in my throat, I continued to speak. "There's nothing I can do now but to accept. I can see that he's finally happy. And that's all that matters to me." I exhaled loudly when I hear my voice cracking in the end. It was frustrating. I always acted strong for everybody. Everyday it felt like my sanity was thinning out. But I don't have a choice. I needed to keep it together.
"What if he comes back?" Kai still held on, he wanted to keep the conversation going. I don't know what he was trying to do but clearly he was again giving me false hopes.
"Then I'll gladly run back to him with my arms wide open." I scoffed right after I said that. It was impossible. He hated me. "Then there's still hope." Kai nudged my side and held his hand out for me. Thank god he was helping me stand up. I felt my knees giving out the second I put pressure on my feet.
I guess our date was over.
We didn't speak anymore throughout the duration of the ride back. I only pat his back when I told him to go in the dorms first. I waited five minutes more before I dragged my feet on the concrete.
"Hey, Jiwon-ssi! Wait!" I froze when I felt a hand pull me back from entirely going inside. I heard the stranger chuckle as he turned me around.
"It's me! We worked together on the CF, remember?" His face instantly registered in my mind. Of course I know him. I was a fan of them when we were still trainees.
I rolled my eyes and playfully chucked his hand away. "What brings you here?" I asked him politely. Well, it was totally beyond what I imagine. Him visiting another company at this hour.
"Wanna grab some ice cream?" He flashed me his adorable smile, his eyes disappearing in the process. He avoided my question but I'll let it slide for now. Oh how could I say no to this? He was adorable. Plus he was my bias in his group.
"Sure. Lets go before somebody sees you." I walked along side of him. We were walking at an abnormally slow pace. I turned to him questioningly.
He just smiled at me again and held my elbow. Oh wow.
He sure was comfortable with me.
