Heart-shaped boxes
Filled with gourmet chocolates
Vases overflowing
With fragrant red and pink blooms
Shiny red paper and pink ribbons
Cover countless boxes
Containing shiny new trinkets
All too soon
The chocolate is gone
Either eaten or stale
The blooms have all lose their petals
Morphing the once clear water
A green cloudy hue
The shiny red paper
And pretty pink bows
Now live in a crumpled heap
Stuffed in trash bins
Already forgotten
The trinkets they concealed
Are mixed in with the rest
The novelty already wearing off
The holiday has come and gone
In the blink of an eye
Leaving behind nothing but
Empty boxes
Dead flowers
And hollow promises
