Anxiety wears a mask
Of bright smiles
The practiced relaxation of muscle tension
The darkening of the iris
Written off as a trick of the light
Hands tucked into pockets
To keep steadyBeneath the smile
Drips a venomous reverence
Filling the stomach with quivering insects
Adding a boldness to handwriting
In an effort to cut out
Physical symptoms of internal struggle
Stranded at low tide
With a heart open wide
