I wake up early the next morning and I grab a backpack fill it full with plastic water bottles and ice packs, anything cold and wet I could find. I then leave a note on the counter telling my dad that I'm going on a hike and will be back soon.

Dreadfully I walk to wear I was supposed to meet Devan . It was 5:55. I had five minutes left until he gets here. My heart is pounding and I'm starting to feel sick, I am deciding to learn how to use fire! Why why am I doing this. I feel like a part of me wants to prove that I can do it that I can face my fears but It's mortifying.

My eyes start to water and I start shaking. "No!" I say loudly. "I'm not going to cry again. I just need to breathe and think about something else." I tell myself.

"You ready?" I hear Devan say from behind me. When did he get here? How did I not hear him coming?

I turn around still a little shaky from earlier and say: "as ready as I'll ever be."

"Alright then let's go. Just follow me it's about a fifteen minute walk." He starts walking . I get up off the ground and jog to catch up to him. "So where exactly are we going?"

He slows down so he can walk next to me. "It's this place I like to call sunlight cove. I don't think it has an actual name, I'm not even sure if anyone else knows where it is. Which is why it's the perfect spot to practice and learn how to use your power."

Not knowing what to say I keep quiet. We walk in silence the rest of the way there. We walk into this small little cave and it's pitch black I can't see anything. "Devan! Can I have a little help here please?"

He comes and grabs my hand and leads me out. I couldn't even see his shiloutte. Once we step out of the cave I have to cover my eyes. The sun was shinning brightly and we were in a small area, there were rocked surrounding is on all sides; it looked like the only way out was back trough the cave. There was a small little tide pool to one side of the area.

One of the rocks had a large flat surface on it,  and another hung over the area a little giving a small spot of shade. There were very few plants. Looked as if there was only a few flowers here and there. It was absolutely stunning. I definitely had never been here before.

"How did you find this place?" I ask still looking around.

"I was just exploring one day and came across it. It's a nice place to get away." He starts biting his nails as if he was nervous. Quickly he changes the subject. "You ready to get started?"

"Oh umm. Yeah. Just let me put my backpack down. I go over to the shaded area and place my bag on the sand. I open it up and grab a few water bottles knowing I would need them. The reason I brought the water Was so that I could put out the flames and fires that I started.

It doesn't look like there is much I can burn but I still want to be careful. "What are those for?" Devan asks.

"There to help me. So how do I start?" I ask setting the water bottles down.

"First I want you to do what you did the other day. I want you to think of the hottest you've ever been and bring all of that heat to your hand. Just like you did before. But this time you need to keep it there and not freak out and have it disappear."

"Okay." I say. Shaking I go and sit by the water. The water gives me comfort. Because I know that it will always be able to stop whatever fire I start. And it is the only place where you can be completely away from the world above. Water is just so soothing.

"Have you started?" I hear Devan say, it puts me out of my thoughts and brings me back to reality. I keep my eyes closed and think once again of the time when me my dad and my mom were camping and I had been messing around in my chair and ended up falling into to the fire pit. It was the first time I became aware of how dangerous fire was.

My head starts to heat up and I feel my forehead sweating. I try to take the heat I felt from that and push it towards my hand. After I minute of focusing I slowly open my eyes. Expecting to see a small flame on my hand I prepare to dunk my hand in the water.

But when I look down at my hand there's nothing there. "Why didn't it work?" I say, not really disappointed that it didn't.

"Did you want a flame to appear? Or did you tell your self that you refused to make a flame appear on your hand?"

"I just did what you said and thought of the hottest I've ever been and focused the heat to my hand. I didn't know I wa supposed to think that I wanted a flame to appear."

"Your not, you just have to want it to appear. You can't just think about it you have to actually want it to happen. You can't be scared of it. You have to be the one to take charge." He says sitting next to me.

"I can't just get rid of my fear! It doesn't work that way." I say raising my voice.

"Please just try again. You won't ever stop being afraid of it. But to control it you have to be stronger then it."

I close my eyes and do exactly what I did last time. I even tried to tell my self that I wasn't afraid of it. But that only made my mind stray to something else and I lost focus. I tried several more times. Nothing was working.

Frustrated I opened my eyes took a deep breath and tried it again. I pushed the heat I felt from being angry towards my hand and felt my hand get hot. Before I could open my eyes I panicked and all of the anger and heat disappeared. "I can't do this!" I shout. My whole body shaking.

"Let's be done for today." Devan hands me a bottle of water. "Are you able to come back tomorrow?"

Taking the water I respond: "yes I'll be able to do it tomorrow." I stand up and head over to my backpack and pack it up.

On the way back we barley speak a word to each other. I felt bad for not really listening to him, but I didn't know how to say sorry so I didn't. Once we reached the place where we met up earlier. He said to meet her the same time tomorrow. Devan started walking away.

"Hey! Devan, thanks for helping me today." I say as he walks away.

"Of course." He says with a small smile. I turn around and start heading home.
