𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗨𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗗 below as the sunlight hit the glass windows of the towering headquarters of WICKED. People are like worker ants hurrying in the streets to go to their respective jobs, syncing together with the bustling cars. Several WICKED guards and government army are patrolling around the entire city. Signs and warnings about the Flare also flashed the walls and billboards.

I stood beside the glass walls, staring at the scene below with a cup of coffee in my hands. It's been two days since we arrived in the Last City and three days since the stunt Thomas pulled.

Chancellor Ava Paige and my father Janson were furious about Thomas's ambush but praised me for keeping Minho and not following Thomas. They said that I know my priorities better. On the other side, Minho would eventually kill me if he's just in the right state of doing it. I could feel that he loathed me triple times than what he already did.

"Miss (L/n)-Janson, the Extraction Program is going to start. We need you in the lab," some unknown laboratory assistant said. I quickly emptied my cup and followed her.

I entered the observation room as Doctor Meyer ordered his assistants to start the program. Minho was strapped on the machine, wires attached on his temples and a thin hose attached on his arm, connecting to the Flaralase extractor.

Ava Paige nodded at me, acknowledging my presence as I walked beside Teresa, who's staring at the room in front of us with a blank expression.

"We're about to start in 10 seconds, Dr. Paige," said Dr. Meyer and he gestured his lab assistants to begin. They punched the controller and the program started.

We never knew what is happening inside Minho's mind given that the program will show your deepest fear. I never knew what was his. Could that be losing his friends? But it already came true. Death? Losing himself or his friends due to Flare? I do not have any idea.

From the monitor, his brain started to function more, like he's curious and puzzled. It's starting now, I thought.

He started to pant like he's being chased. His heart rate began to rise and his temperature started to heat up. His forehead started to crease in what appeared to be anxiousness. He's inside the Maze, I thought. That sent me a much stronger pang of guilt. His biggest fear was something that I built, my prized blueprint when I was little.

The monitor showing his brain activity showed that his brain waves were running out of control. Minho took very deep breaths, his breathing could be heard through the intercom.

"How's he doing?" Ava Paige asked.

"Breathing levels look strong," Dr. Meyer replied. He walked in front of Minho and shone a flashlight on his eyes, those slightly squinted. "Still light responsive."

Dr. Meyer back away then we continued to observe Minho. His breathing suddenly sharpened, his heart rate started to spike up.

"No... no! No!" he screamed and I could see the horror in his face. He's seeing things. Grievers. The thought made me sick that I wanted to puke and tell them to stop.

Teresa noticed my reaction and touched my arm. She shot me an "it's okay" look and I nod. He's just seeing the horrors in his head like a form of a dream. It is not true and will never be true again.

His breathing started to slow down and his heart rate slowly went back to normal. The brain waves projected by his brain activity started to lessen. Dr. Meyer checked for light response again yet Minho didn't squint or even twitch. He just stared at the ceiling like he's defeated.
