"After 15 years, I never thought I would see you again, Rosalie!" Kate squeals, pulling her into another hug. "How have you been? Where did you go? How's Elizabeth?"
Rose, with the help of Logan and Lindsey, relays the past events, from Rose waking up for the first time, to Elizabeth dying, and all the way to the end where they ended up at 9-13 Baskerville Road.
"Oh, Rosie, that's horrible. Your aunt Elizabeth was an amazing woman. Don't worry, little bird; you shall avenge her death. One way or another, you will," Kate reassures her, squeezing her hand.
"Kate? Where are Rose's parents? Are they at work or something?" Lindsey asks her, wanting to get right down to business.
"That's the thing, kids; I don't know. I woke up one day and Lily and Tommy were gone. All they left was a note saying that they left and would not be coming back. That was about 14 years ago. I'm sorry kids, but I know as much as you do when it comes to this." Kate shrugs, offering them a sympathetic look.
"Do you have any idea where they could have gone? Did they leave any clues? Anything?" Rose asks desperately. They couldn't just be gone. Were they so depressed that they had to give up their child that they left? Or did they somehow know she would have survived and not want her to find them?
"Well they did say they've always wanted to move to New York; they just never had the money," Kate replies; you could practically see the wheels turning in her head.
"New York is the perfect place to start over..." Logan mutters.
"Then to New York it is!" Lindsey exclaims.
"Wait!" Rose says. "I never found out: what state are we in? I know we're in the United States, but..."
"I'll tell you one thing, princess. We're a long way from the Big Apple. Welcome to the Golden State," Logan replies dramatically, spreading out his arms.
"Why do you always have to make things so damn dramatic," Lindsey mutters. "Basically, we're in California. So we either need to buy plane tickets or drive all the way across the country. And I don't want to be stuck in a car with this idiot for who knows how long. I don't care about my fear of heights; I'd rather take a plane."
"And where are we going to get the money for the tickets, Lindsey, since you're such a genius," Logan retorts.
"I could be of some assistance," Kate interjects from her spot on the couch. "Just because your parents left, doesn't mean they took everything. Their money is still in the bank. How do you think I've been paying the bills if no one has been here to give me my paycheck?"
"Wait..." Lindsey drawls out, realizing something. "If Lily and Tommy have been gone for 14 years, why are you still here, taking care of the house?"
"They gave it to me," Kate replies, shrugging. "The night before they left, they said that they were giving me the house; of course, I thought they were joking. But that was until I found out that they had signed some documents, legally making me the owner of the house. And that bank account I mentioned? Legally, that's mine too, even though I already have one."
"They must have known they were leaving..." Logan mutters, the gears in his head turning. "Almost as if they had planned to..."
"But why would they move? Sure, they lost a daughter; that's the worst thing. But to move? What does that have to do with anything?" Lindsey replies, catching on with what Logan was thinking.
"Well I don't know, but we sure as hell are going to find out," Rose replies, a glint in her eyes. It reminded Kate so much of Lily.
"You know, Lily and I were best friends. It was the best thing ever when she said I could work for her. It wasn't even awkward. And when I found out she was pregnant with you and she named me your godmother, that was one of the best days of my life. You remind me so much of her..." Kate trails off, her eyes turning cloudy as she reminisces in the past. She shakes her head, as if she suddenly remembered she had guests. "If you want, you kids are welcome to stay here."
"It's fine, Kate, we already checked in at a hotel," Rose replied, smiling sweetly. "But we'll call you if we find out anything, okay?"
With a nod, Kate scribbles down her number on a piece of paper and hands it to Rose. "Stay safe, Rosie. I don't want to lose you again." She walks the three teens to the door to see them out, giving Rose one last hug before they departed.
Closing the door gently, Kate walked over to the phone in the living room, dialing an all too familiar number. "Dr. Cooper? It's Kate. Mission accomplished, sir; they're heading for New York."
