Chapter 17

Crap.

That conversation didn't need to have been said when my boyfriend was around. Heck, no one needed to hear that conversation.

"No I didn't" I lied, laughing a fake laugh. "Yes.....you did" Liam said, his face looking extremely angry. "Liam, I like you" I reassured him. "No you don't" Liam shot back. "You like Everett! You said it yourself" he shouted. "But you're my girlfriend, you will listen to me. And I don't appreciate my girlfriend talking to other guys" he said, raising his hand. He slapped me right across the face. I looked up and touched my cheek. Tears filled my eyes, it hurt really bad. "Want me to do it again? Huh?" he yelled. "No!" I screamed through a mouthful of tears. But his hand wiped my cheek again. I screamed in pain. He lifted his hand again, getting ready to hit me again. "STOP!" I heard Everett yell. He jumped in between me and Liam. "Get out of my way Everett!" Liam said firmly. "'No! What gives you the right to hit her?" Everett asked. "She's my girlfriend!" Liam exclaimed. "She might be your girlfriend, but you don't own her" Everett explained. A minute later, Charlie burst into the apartment. "Charlie, take Lily home" Everett instructed her. I got up to go to Charlie, but Liam grabbed my arm. "Next time I see you, you'll wish you'd never met me" Liam whispered. "Thankfully, she'll never see you again" Everett said through clenched teeth. "C'mon, L, let's go home" Charlie said, starting for the door. "Everett, let's go!" Charlie yelled to Everett. "Coming" Everett said, taking one last good look at Liam. He quickly followed us out the door.

When we got home, Charlie helped me inside and sat me down on the couch. "What the heck was that?" Charlie immediately asked. I didn't respond. I didn't feel like talking about it. "He could go to jail for that you know" Everett started. "And he could get fired" he added. "Tomorrow, we'll report him, all of us have work" Charlie suggested. I nodded, so did Everett. "I'm gonna go, and get a fun surprise set up" Charlie said, trying to make me feel better. I nodded, before she walked out of the apartment. The second she was out the door, I started to cry. "Hey, it's ok" Everett comforted me. He sat down next to me. I rested my head on his shoulder. "I'm a complete idiot, aren't I?" I asked. "No Lily, you're not. You're a nice girl who just got abused by her boyfriend. Well, maybe not boyfriend anymore. My point is, you didn't know he was going to do that. That doesn't make you an idiot" Everett explained. I was so mad at myself and upset with Liam that I didn't know what to do or say. "I can't believe that just happened" I admitted. "Me either" Everett said, examining my cheek. He touched it lightly. "Ow!" I yelped. "Does that hurt?" he asked. I nodded. "Hold on" he said, getting up. Everett walked over to the fridge and took out some frozen peas, and wrapped them in a paper towel. "Here" he said, handing me the peas. I placed the peas on my cheek. It felt so nice. "Thanks" I said quietly. He nodded. After a few minutes of silence, I finally spoke up. "Everett" I started. "Yeah?" he asked. I turned to face him. "I do like you" I whispered. He stared at me for a second. "I like you too" Everett said back. Our heads started to move closer together. And just as our lips touched, I closed my eyes. I drew back and opened my eyes. Everett had a smile on his face. I smiled too.

I was, for the first time in a while, genuinely happy.
