Four days later I got a call from the interviewer. I got the job after all, and he wanted me to train right away. I got another email with all my employee documents and spent the afternoon filling in the blanks.
I was really excited when I told Sasha after he got home. He celebrated with me by making burgers and fries. Yeah, making them. Like not from a fast food shop or anything. I had no idea you could do that.
I loved the way he cooked everything though. I was never going to look at another burger and fries the same. My burger was juicy and fat. There were more toppings than you normally can get on one just from the size.
The fries. Oh my sweet Jesus the fries. So crunchy on the outside and so tender on the inside. they were thick cut too and not soaked in oil like I was used to. Just lightly salted and mouth-wateringly good.
I was going to have to get him to make it again. Without a doubt. I had laid on the couch in a food coma, cuddled up against him and dozing while he watched tv. It felt good to have him stroke my hair like that.
I went to work for the first time as an adult only two days after that. I dressed like I did for the interview just in case. Also made sure to bring all my paperwork filled out and ready to go.
The woman at the front gave me a once over and took my paperwork. She sat me down at the other computer table there and showed me how to sign into their system. I wrote down everything so I wouldn't forget.
Then I entered myself into the computer as a new employee. She explained to me that the system was very similar for entering new patients into it. The sooner I got used to doing it myself, the better off I'd be.
While I was doing all of that, she took in a steady stream of appointments right in front of me. You would get interrupted a lot if you worked at the front like this. It was nice to actually see how she did everything though.
It didn't seem too hard to grasp, and as soon as I was finished entering my own information I offered to help her with her stack. She passed me the files and showed me the different area for patients.
It was really similar. I found myself relaxing and got to work pretty fast. Only had to get up to take a piss once and that gave me an idea of where both the toilets and break room were.
"Is he already entering new patients?" I heard my boss' voice from beside me.
"Yes, he is very quick with technology. I only had to show him a few things and he's figured most of it out." Helen praised me with a smile. I smiled back and waved at the boss.
"Great. That's great. Let's get him entering charting information tomorrow then. I have a large backlog." He replied with relieved expression. I felt a little nervous at the words, since I had only just started.
"Sure thing. I'll introduce him to Susan too. She can help him with the filing." Helen replied. I felt a little overwhelmed, so I concentrated on what I was doing until lunch time.
I had only packed a sandwich and fruit, so it didn't take me long to finish. Helen said that I could wait until my break was done, or go back and bank the extra fifteen minutes to either add to my other break or leave early.
She explained that they could only do that if there were two administrators on at the same time. Another option was to get paid for it, and there was a spot for adding 'on call' or 'overtime' hours to each pay period.
There were so many rules. There was so much to learn in such a short time. School didn't prepare me for this. Exams felt like a walk in the park compared to the afternoon rush. For every file I finished, six more topped her desk.
"This is the charting you will be doing tomorrow. Don't look so scared, Lukas. You are doing great." She tried to reassure me with a smile. She wasn't the one working her fingers off though.
Not that she wasn't busy. She was. I was just flustered a little. I tried not to show it. I smiled and waved as she introduced me to long time clients. I watched when an emergency patient was brought in.
I was shown and told how to handle it all. I felt like my brain was a sieve. Even though I wrote notes, at the end of the day I stared at them and couldn't recall a single thing I had done.
I understood the term whirlwind now. I really felt the truth in what Sasha said about being too tired after work. I was so exhausted I barely made it home before I collapsed on the living room floor and groaned.
"Are you dead?" Sasha's amused voice drifted over me. I mumbled into the floor and he poked me with his foot.
"That was so hard..." I whined. He chuckled at me and poked me again.
"Oh come on. It was only one day." He teased me with a scoffing voice. I turned my head to look at him and pouted.
"I was soooo busy. How do you survive? Ughhhh." I drooped even more to show how pitiful I looked and he chuckled again.
"You will get used to it. I know you are stronger than you pretend." He looked at me with a doting gaze and I wanted to protest so badly.
"No I'm naaawt. I'm the weakest ever. Why do you even like me?" I mumbled without moving. He pushed me with his foot again and I groaned.
"I don't just like you Lukas, I love you. You are better than you think. You just need to work hard, and you will see it too." He assured me. I shook my head and wanted to go to sleep right there.
"You're crazy. I'm too tired. Just let me die here." I was being dramatic and we both knew it. I really did want to sleep though. At least until the wind was knocked out of me by a heavy body landing over top.
"Not a chance. There will be no dying on my living room floor." He grumbled. I shifted to look over my shoulder and he was sitting on me. His knees sprawled on either side and his arms came down next to my shoulders.
He turned me over and we stared at each other. He grinned first and leaned in to hover over my mouth. I wanted him to kiss me. My eyes begged. I whined a little in my throat.
"Come on Lukas. Give me a kiss." He teased me. It required me making an effort. I would have to pull my heavy body off the floor to reach him. I raised one arm and tried to pull him down.
It wasn't working. He was stronger than me, probably by a lot. It wouldn't take much effort for him to resist my weak efforts. I huffed in frustration and then used my arm to pull myself towards his mouth.
I barely made it, but I managed to graze his lips before my arm gave out and I collapsed back on the floor. I let out a very manly grunt as my back collided with it. He was laughing at me now, and I looked up to watch it.
He was so handsome. I think I fell in love again as he laughed. I would fall a million times over if I could hear it every time. Best of all, he leaned down and kissed me with his smiling face.
"Good enough."
