Winter Has ComeSam
Everything was happening so quickly in Sam's mind. The undead rushing over the Unsullied's first platoon, the Wights flanking the living from left and right, and the storm that had only limited Sam's eyesight to the point where he could barely see the torches there were only a few feet from him.
Wights were coming around the, turning them, killing them all so fast that not even Sam could think of a more strategic way to fight them. Not that anyone could blame, no one could control time itself. If they could, the battle would've taken a different route to a restart.
Looking up as he plunged his Dragonglass dagger in the eye of an undead skeleton, Sam heard the faint screeches of a nearby dragon while another flew overhead, spewing fire on the ground to keep the Wights at bay before the storm put out the fire. As long as the Night King and the storm existed, the battle would already be at a loss.
It was when he barely could push off an approaching undead Dothraki that Sam realized they were outnumbered the longer they remained in the open. Luckily, he didn't need to be the one to issue the command to retreat.
"Fall back, fall back!" A Wilding yelled over the rapid movement of ice and snow.
His voice was soon carried by other, commanded and followed as thousands were alreday evacuating the battle and were heading back to the castle. But it wouldn't be long until the dead would catch up to the stragglers or the wounded, then they would use them to increase their numbers.
Sam spun around to see Northmen, Dothraki, Wildings, Knights of The Vale, and even The Hound himself retreating from the lines of battle while the Unsullied stayed their ground to defend the retreat.
He had only a moment to get to the gate before the others would be forced to shut it. He wasn't going to miss his one and only opportunity to remain alive.
Despite his lacking experience with fighting or any combat skills he was forced to know of back in Castle Black, Sam fought off well enough to get past at least a few Wights before one pinned him on the ground.
Hearing the screams--though they were easily identified--Dolorus Edd turned to his left and saw his friend's back meeting the ground with a Wight wanting to get up close and give him a smile, a blue smile.
With his back on the ground and his weapon elsewhere, Dolorus immediately knew Sam had little time to remain alive even if he had proven himself more of a warrior than he could think of.
He ran to his friend and drove his Valyrian Steel sword into the Wight's head, blooding sputtering out from its decaying head and skull. Though free and now able to run even if his heart was pumping more adrenaline than ever, Sam froze.
It was common for him to do it more than once, he had done it plenty of times before and now it was time for it to happen again.
Sam watched at the distance to see Wights overwhelming those who could not join up with the ones who retreated first, murdered and butchered like sheep to only soon return as one of them. Less humanity and more machine than human.
"Sam get up!" Dolorus yelled as he pulled Sam up.
Blinking back into reality, Sam looked at Dolorus and saw that it was his friend that had saved his life. Grateful and alive, both shared a short, brief moment of relief before it was quickly erased.
Dolorus had been distracted too long, even a second drove his attention away from the battle would leave him in a problem. And it did. The rusted sword of a Wight pierced into the back of his skull and revealed the blade outside above his left cheek, spitting out blood and sweat.
