"Les! If you don't get back here right this instant I'll tell mom you- you-" Davey yelled one the middle of the street as he and his little brother tried to find their way to their new jobs.
"You'll tell mom I what? You know i'm the favourite so she'll believe me!" Les smirked and ran ahead, leaving Davey to fend for himself in the busy early morning streets of New York.
"Les?" He called out, "Where did you go? We need to get to the distribution gate or whatever it's called! Les?"
"Davey!" a small voice squealed from a hidden alleyway beside him. As Davey sprinted up to him, he noticed two older boys starting to square up to his helpless little brother.
"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" one of them said with a smirk.
"Looks like fresh meat to me, Morris."
"Fresh meat you say Oscar? Those other ones are getting a bit boring anyways, I'm liking this." Morris laughed in response and began to crack his knuckles.
Now Davey has never been in a real fight because he was always reading, but his father had told him enough about his childhood days for him to know that this wasn't good. Before it was too late, he grabbed Les and covered him with his own body and prepared himself for the inevitable beating he was about to receive.

But it never came.

He reluctantly opened his eyes when he heard the groans of what appeared to be Oscar being beaten up by... Morris? No, Morris was already on the ground with a nasty red mark on his face. It was another boy than he didn't see before! He looked about his age but he couldn't properly tell due to the dimly lit alleyway. Once he had finished beating the two other boys to a pulp, the mystery boy approached the two. David assumed that like him, his little brother was staring with his mouth wide open because the boy said something about not catching flies.
"Hello? Anyone home?" The boy questioned.
"Um, sorry, yes i'm David and this is my brother Les. Who- who are you?" Les ran up to the boy and engulfed him in a tight hug and thanked him over and over again while David was too busy noticing his captivating eyes.
"The name's Jack, Jack Kelly" he chuckled, "What are yous two doing down here anyways? Yous don't look like the type we's used to seeing round here."
There was an unnatural pause as the two older boys locked eyes properly for the first time, each as lost as the other until a certain little boy piped up: "We're going to become newsboys! Our daddy is sick so now it's up to us to be the men of the house!" For a kid who's dad was out of work, he seemed awfully happy.
"Newsies you say? Well yous have come to the right place! I's was just about to head down to the gate and collect my papes if ya wanna join me?" Jack offered his new friends.
"Oh, thats would be very kind. Are you sure that's not a problem?"  Davey wondered, nobody was ever this nice to him when he was in school.
"Of course not, we's all brothers out here."

Jack and Davey walked side by side all the way to the gate, their fingers occasionally brushing together more and more often as the walk went on. Jack could've sworn he caught David staring at him but he knew nothing could ever come of it, Race would never let him hear the end of it.

A/N in my mind, Javid will always be the '92 movie version because the ✨tie pull✨ anyway this was a bit longer this time :)
