When we arrive at the dorm, it's covered in darkness. It would have been believable that no one was home if I didn't hear the snickering coming from behind the couch. Haru quickly caught on. She started to complain before eight guys jumped out of different corners of the room.
"Damn it, guys! We said NO surprises!" Haru said, jumping a little.
The room was decked out in various party supplies, like streamers, balloons, and even banners. I can't help but smile at the hand made signs reading 'Congrats!' and 'Happy birthday!' and there was a massive picture frame that held a collage of pictures that we have all taken together. I spotted a few that I didn't even know existed like one of me passed out on the floor of the practice room with my homework scattered around me or the one of Haru and I taking a shot together.
"What's with the birthday stuff?" I asked, eyeing the pile of presents pushed in the corner.
"We won't be together for your birthdays this summer. So we figured we would throw a combined party for you both," Jin said as one of his arms dangle from my shoulders. He steers me back to the kitchen, where food is all over the island. There's a mixture of western and Asain foods; I already feel my mouth water while staring at the array. A number cake is in the middle and it's like an art piece. There are flowers and fruits on top with dollops of icing in between the layers.
"I hate to break it to you guys, but I'm only turning 18," I said.
"How many times do we have to tell you that you're already twenty here? You turned 20 on the 1st," Bun said, giving me an annoyed look.
"I know. I just like annoying all of you. Did you guys take the night off to do all of this?"
"It's our last time we'll all be together until the fall," Tae said.
"Plus, I feel like we have all worked hard. We deserve to have fun together," Namjoon said, pouring glasses of champagne. He hands out the glasses before raising his glass, "I feel like the last time we were here together was ages ago, but it hasn't even been a year since we've met Melody, Minjun, and Haru, but you guys already feel like a part of our small family we have. I know we have all known about Melody for years, but getting to be around her positivity instead of just hearing about it through Jungkook, is inspiring.
"Haru, you were so quiet around all of us at first and I always felt terrible with inviting you to places with us. I know you are a fan, but I'm glad you also consider us as friends. Your personality lights up the room and I know we can't wait for many years to come with you.
"Minjun, you're one of the best dancers and choreographers I have known. You're patient with us and don't mind staying late, even when you can leave for the day. I value your hard drive and your effort does not go unnoticed. Keep that in mind when you are applying for jobs in the future.
"To the six other guys around the table, you know how much I love and appreciate each and every one of you. We fight and we bicker, but you are my brothers, and I look up to each of you. Every person in this room inspires me to keep living and become a better version of myself every day. To us!"
As he raises his glass, the rest of us do too. I feel tears sting my eyes, and as I meet everyone else's, I see the emotion in them as well. The speech hit all of us in our feels.
"Okay, enough sad talk! Let's eat and get drunk so that I can beat Melody at Just Dance again!" Tae said, bumping my hip.
"Tae, I beat you last time! I also beat you at karaoke!"
His eyes squint like he's in deep thought, "I swear I won."
"You were too drunk to even stand," Bun said, patting his friend on the shoulder.
We all just stay standing around the island, picking pieces of the food as we all just talked and goofed around. As the night went on, we played tons of board and video games. Bets were placed and if we all remembered the next day, then Jin and Hobi have a lot of chores while they're on tour. While watching Jimin and Tae box each other on the big screen, I sneaked away from the yelling, heading to the balcony. The Han River sparkled in the distance and I tried to keep myself from taking in a deep breath of the smog invested air. The balcony door creaked open, having an idea of who it was, I turn to see Bun walking over to me with a light blanket. He draped it over my shoulders before turning to the railing and leaning over it, looking up at the sky.
"The stars are beautiful tonight," he whispered.
I look up, confused and gasp as I see a clear sky with specks of glittering stars, "We can see them."
"It's like they're telling us that they'll be here for us when we come back."
I sigh at his statement, feeling a tear slip down my face, "I should be happy right now. I'm with my friends and I just finished my first year of college. I had a crazy year, but I'm sad to be leaving so soon."
"You'll be back in August and it'll be so much easier for you," Bun said, turning to me. He gently cupped my cheeks and wiped the tears falling from my eyes, "You'll be back before you know it. We'll be back before you know it. Spend time with your family and then come back to me with a fresh mind."
I nod, wrapping my arms around his waist as he does the same. His chin resting on the top of my head, "You endured a lot this year and I wish I could take the pain away from you. Just know that all I want is for you to be happy. I'll still be a phone call or text away. We'll still play league together and when we get back at the end of August, we'll be able to go to Han River and the stars will greet us like they are tonight. You're strong, Kitten."
I nod into his chest, staying like that, just listening to each other's breathing and enjoying being next to each other. Soon, Bun pulled away and his eyes met mine. I watched as it looked like he was battling himself on whether to say something or not. Before I could encourage him, the door opened, Jimin poking his head through, "You've been out here for a while and I think Minjun is getting antsy without Melody."
"Okay, I'll be there in a sec," I say, watching Jimin go back inside, "What is it, Bun?"
When I turn back to him, the sparkle in his eyes is gone and I frown.
"Nothing. Come on. Let's get back in. It's kind of chilly out here anyway."
I follow close behind him, my mind trying to decipher what he wanted to say but came up blank. He'll tell me when he is ready. When I'm fully back in, Minjun is drunkenly dancing with Tae and Jimin while Yoongi and Jin scream into microphones. I can't help but smile, joining my friends in a fun night that we could only remember bits and pieces of.
