The smell of cinnamon was wafting from the kitchen as Kaylee, my dad, and I finished putting all the baubles and string lights on the huge Christmas tree in the living room. When I arrived home, there wasn't a decoration in sight, making the place feel dreary. So for the entire week that I've been here, I have been decorating the whole house. Lights, fake snow, and small Santa figurines that my grandma has had since she was a kid were all put out only a few days before Christmas. To top it all off, we decorated the tree.

On Christmas Eve

But as they say, better late than never.

As we sit down, Ma comes out with a tray full of gingerbread cookies and hot cocoa. I quickly stand to grab the tray from her, handing out all the goodies as she sits down in her chair with a little huff. I settle down in my spot again and glance over at her. She was starting to look worse and worse as the days went by. Her eyes were sunken in, her face lacked the normal glow, and she had lost so much weight, making her even more frail than before.

"Have you talked to Bun today?"

I look over at my dad. He also looked tired. His eyes weren't glowing and his wrinkles were starting to show more than they used to.

"Not yet. I'll call him after the movie. He's probably still asleep anyway. He's been sleeping in until noon since they're off right now," I replied.

My dad hummed and turned back to the movie; in what seemed like minutes, Kaylee and I were surrounded by light snoring. We chatted quietly between us as the movie kept playing, "So when are you going to see your parents?"

"Next week. They bought me a plane ticket, so I can't say no," Kaylee grumbled.

"It'll be good to see them. I know you're mad at them but just think, Seattle is huge. You'll have tons of places to take pictures."

She stretches her tan arms and stands up, tossing the blanket on the back of the couch, "I would rather stay here and annoy your family than be annoyed by mine."

"Wanna go FaceTime Bun?"

Her eyes light up at the mention of him and she nods her head quickly. I tell her to just go up to my room while I help my grandma to bed. As I slowly wake her up, Ma looks like she doesn't know where she's at for a few seconds before her gaze lands on me recognizing who I am. I help her to her bed that has been moved into the dining room since she can't go up the stairs easily anymore.

I got her a glass of water before tucking her in and kissing her forehead, humming the entire time, just like how she tucked me in until I became a teenager and told her I was too old to be tucked in.

How stupid I was then.

You're never too old for love.

When I make it back upstairs, Kaylee is hanging upside on my bed, scrolling through her phone lazily. Her strawberry blonde hair was spilling to the floor as she hummed along to one of my more recent piano covers.
