I had a dream
I got everything I wanted
Not what you'd think
And if I'm being honest
It might've been a nightmare
To anyone who might care
Thought I could fly (fly)
So I stepped off the Golden, mm
Nobody cried (cried, cried, cried, cried)
Nobody even noticed
I saw them standing right there
Kinda thought they might care (might care, might care)"Billie this is amazing," Finneas exclaims after listening to the song for the third time. "We are totally getting another Grammy."
I laugh. "You think so?"
"Hell yeah! Do you not hear this? It's beautiful."
"Thanks dude," I smile bashfully. "It feels super personal, but I want to share it with people."
"Has Alissa heard it yet?"
I shake my head no. "Nah. I don't know if she'll like it."
"I mean it's about her right? Why wouldn't she like it?" he asks.
"I guess I feel that way because I haven't really shared with her my struggles and shit. She still doesn't know about my nightmares."
"Bil," he sighs. "You're about to marry this girl. You should be able to tell her everything by now."
I run my fingers through my hair, taking in everything he's saying. I want to tell Alissa, but I don't want her to think I have doubts about us. I don't know why my thoughts have been so negative these past few months. It's like every time I think I'm over it these weird nightmares creep in and make me feel like nothing is going right, like I'm alone in all of this.
"I know, it's just hard. It seems like I can never just be a good version of myself. I don't want her to think I went from abusive drugged up Billie to insecure weak Billie."
"You are far from weak," he tells me honestly. "You are the strongest person I know. Sure you've made mistakes, but you've grown and that shit doesn't define you. You're caring, wise, annoyingly funny, and brave. Even after all the bullshit Alissa is lucky to have you."
My eyes start to well up with tears. Hearing someone say that about me feels damn good after all the torturing I've been doing to myself. I embrace Finneas in a hug and he squeezes me tightly. When our mushiness subsides we wrap up our studio session then I head to my parent's house to pickup Mila.
"Come see what she's doing," my mom beams as soon as she lets me inside. We head through the massive house to the family room and I spot Mila sitting on the piano singing her ABCs while my dad plays the melody.
"Smart girl," my dad praises her as their song comes to an end.
Mila claps happily and leans forward placing a kiss on his forehead.
"She has him wrapped around her finger. Isn't that right honey?" my mom giggles.
"Yep," he tickles the toddler making her laugh. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."
