"Cam please go to school. You know I hate it when you miss school." My dad sighed as I gathered his chemo bag where we keep cross word puzzles, books, and magazines to help keep him busy while he is at his treatments.
"Dad please don't argue with me on this. Today is a big appointment and mom can't be there and I am the next best thing. I won't budge on this besides I am only missing two classes but I am caught up on the work anyways so I would just be sitting there twiddling my thumbs." I warn hoping my tone let him know I wouldn't change my mind.
"So stubborn my sweet Cam. Well come on then." He sighed grabbing his bag from my hands leading us out towards his car.
"Do you want me drive?" I asked skeptically watching him climb into the driver seat.
"Cameron I have cancer I am not paralyzed. I want to drive now either you get in this car or go back to school those are your only two options." He arched an eyebrow at me and smiled triumphantly while I huffed and climbed into the passenger seat of his Ford Escape.
"Are you nervous?" I asked started conversation as he drove to the hospital. I know the answer before I ever ask the question. No.
"No Cam, I am not nervous. I know that sounds crazy but this is the deck of cards I have been dealt and I am okay with that." Wise words from the strongest man I have ever known.
The drive to the hospital was almost suffocating. My emotions were taking a toll on me and along with my nerves of what the doctors will say have me uneasy. We walked inside and my dad checked himself in while we waited for him to be called back to get checked by his doctor. I flipped through magazines not reading the articles but observing the pictures. The outfits these celebrities are wearing these days are mind blowing.
"Timothy Davis." Veronica, a chemotherapy nurse smiled brightly from the wooden door. We followed behind her as she led us down the same familiar hallway we have been down countless times.
"How are ya feeling today Tim?" She offered my dad a small smile as she scribbled down his vitals making notes in my dads medical folder.
"Oh I feel wonderful Veronica, busy day today?" My dad asked as he took a seat on the bed while she took his blood. Leave it to my dad to change the subject by asking how someone else is doing. Such a selfless man. She wrapped a rubber band around my dads arm and inserted a needle. I watched as blood started to fill the syringe before I had to look away. Just the sight of blood is enough to leave me feeling weak. Needles and I aren't the best of friends.
"Oh you know it but I wouldn't have it any other way! I am going to send this to the labs while you are getting your chemo. I have your favorite snacks for whenever you are finished." She led us further down the hallway stopping at the lab to drop off my dads blood sample.
"Such an angel Veronica. Thank you." She helped my dad into his chemo chair and inserted the plug into his port. She started his treatment before excusing herself.
My dad went to his magazines reading and keeping up with all of the current celebrity gossip. My dad was once a hard working man driven by case after case at the firm. But now? Well now he knows which celebrity couple is 'the it couple' or 'who wore it best' Something so foreign but it keeps his mind occupied so that't enough for me.
My phone went off with a notification that I had received a text message. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and plopped down in a cushioned recliner chair and made myself comfortable.
'How's it going?' My heart skipped a beat when I read Will's name pop up on the screen.
'So far so good. Dad is getting chemo while we wait for blood results and to see the doctor.' I started messaging Will back.
