Eyeing the line of customers, I waited patiently for another tome to chat with Nick. Every time I had a chance to stand up more customers would come out, taking their place in line. Nick noticed and laughed, I chuckled along with him.
Deciding I might as well wait, I turned back around, sighing into my arms. I laid the side of my head down onto the table, looking around the room for something to stare at.
Pulling out my phone, I turned it on and starred into my wallpaper.
Once my fingerprint unlocked my phone, I clicked into random folders, hoping I would find something to do. Checking up on my notifications I found nothing from the past half an hour.
"Here you go miss." The waitress called, handing me my drink.
I sprung up from my seat, my hair a mess.
Slightly embarrassed from my lazy look, I thanked her awkwardly.
She nodded, turning back around to leave to the kitchen. Her high ponytail whipping around , hitting her shoulder before going back to casually bouncing from side to side.
Taking a sit of my boiling hot cappuccino, I licked my lips, noticing the line slowing down. I slowly scooted my way closer, making my way down the row of chairs one by one till I was close enough to Nick so we could talk and not interrupt the customers.
"Hm, you know what? I like ya, you're interesting.." I start, resting my feat on the bars of the stool. I bounced my legs, taking a sip of my cappuccino.
"And just so you know I'm totally not just saying that because I'm really lonely and need someone to talk to" I add swiftly, hoping he wouldn't hear.
"Yeah?" Nick responded chuckling
"We should hang out sometime then." He suggested, I perked my head up at his comment.
"You got discord?"
I nodded, placing my cup down on the bench behind me.
"Yeah I do, its my account from last year though, I don't use it often.." I replied
Nick handed me a yellow sticky note pad and a pen, I took them from him.
"Write down your username and hash and ill add you when im done with work." Nick instructed, I obliged and wrote down my details before handing them back to him.
"we'll have to send our timetables through as well, so we know when to not interrupt each other as well." He added
"Sure thing."
Nick smiled, I smiled back.
"Oi Nick! Quit getting chummy with the customers and get back to work! We aint working our asses off so you can have a chat!" One of the other workers called out from behind Nick. She was a bright blonde with rather attractive looks. Usually the blondes are stereotyped to be the bitches, but she seemed pretty chill.
She hung over his shoulder, pointing at me.
"And you, quit distracting my co-worker, we have work to get done." She said, her voice laced with a strong, and demanding tone.
Nick rolled his eyes before turning around to her.
"Chill out, I'm still working, we were quickly organising something so we can chat later." He defended.
"Yeah, my breaks almost over anyways." I added, sculling down a couple more mouthfuls of my drink.
The blonde gave me a stare for a couple seconds before letting out a huff, turning around and leaving.
"Don't mind her, she's always like that." Nick stated, I nodded. We sat in comfortable silence for a minute as Nick turned back to new customers for a second.
"Well, it looks like things are getting busier here now, I should head out." I exclaimed, standing up as I packed away my things.
"Talk to you later." Nick replied.
Taking the last few sips of my cappuccino, I placed the empty cup on the bench and left, giving Nick a wave as I left and headed back to work.
Licking the last bits of froth from around my mouth, I let out a satisfied sigh, resting my hands in my pant pockets. Feeling refreshed from my chat with Nick and my delicious drink, I strolled down the street with a spring in my step, feeling much more energetic than before.
I hope I have enough energy to get through the rest of my shift..
Once I would get back to work it would be Matthews break time, so it was nice to get a little bit more energy in to take all those customers for a while.
Having to work behind the cashier for so many hours a day can be extremely energy draining, and when the diners open 24/7 we constantly have customers, so we don't even get a small break to make a coffee out back.
Occasionally Matthew and I would sneak into the staff room and grab a couple coffees despite being caught and told off most of the time. The boss likes us to stay on top of our work and not over wheal ourselves, so we don't get multiple breaks.
It took a couple weeks to convince the boss to let us have out 30-minute breaks, but after much attempt we finally managed to win. We've been needing these breaks during the day much more than we originally thought.
Before we got our breaks, we would have 5 minutes to eat our lunch and switch each time and only a couple bathroom stops. Whenever we would get a bathroom break we would stop past the kitchen each time and sneak a snack, only once have we been caught.
Stepping through the front gates, all the different sounds and smells rushed towards me in a split second, giving me the usual sense of comfort.
Seeing Matthew in the distance, his eyes caught with mine as I saw the wash of relief flood over his tired expressions.
"Hey Bud, you holding up okay?" I asked, he gave me a tired nod.
"You go get some food and a coffee, take a break, you've done good." I suggested, he smiled as he made his way to the front doors.
Well I guess I'm back here again.
"Hi, welcome do Denny's, how may I take your order?"
