This book idea originally came from a short story I wrote years ago. It was about a girl who started crushing on a boy who moved years ago. Only, the boy never moved he just died. The fact she couldn't see herself in the mirror was about being lost in her ideal perfections and the impact of a coma on her dream.
Obvi, that didn't work out and got very changed and played with until I wrote the first chapter of Dirt using the same idea. (Again, it evolved a shit ton from the first chapter of each story).
But, i was going through old stories and found Foggy Mirrors (the short story's title). I figured it would be a fun little addition after our epilogue.
"In the vampire stories and tales, a sure-shot sign of being a vampire is no reflection. My fingers leave streaks on the mirror, nearly translucent white streaks following my fingertips. Like my fingertips are shooting stars, leaving stardust in my wake.
I trace my face, the mirror cool and slick. Sometimes, I feel like I'm a vampire. The light seems to cause more damage than the dark. Sleep is more alluring during the day. And my reflection. Gone. Invisible. Beyond realization and sight.
I don't know why my image is gone, though. It's frightening. In a way. It's also...calming. That it's not just my paranoia telling me I'm dead. Gone. A lost cause. The mirror thinks so too."
